What You Will Do



This position will be filled at either the HP Field Coordinator 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Radiation Protection Institutional Programs (RPP-PROG) is looking for qualified individuals to join their group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The successful candidate will work within one of RPP-PROG's five different programs: Radiation Protection Training, Radiological Engineering (RE), Technical and Regulatory Program (TARP), Radiation Generating Device and Radioactive Sealed Source Program (RGD/RSS), and Pipelines and Hiring.
  • RP Training - A program of dedicated Radiation Professionals that provide initial and continuing RCT training along with institution wide Rad Worker training
  • RE - Provides computational assessments of the necessary engineered and administrative controls to implement new or changes to radiological operations at the institution
  • TARP - Responsible for generating and maintaining all RP institutional procedures, selecting and maintaining all RP software, leading or assisting with all internal division assessments, and maintaining all RP records for LANL
  • RGD/RSS - Maintains the DOE required databases of all accountable RSSs on site and all RGDs on site, submits required notifications to the DOE annually, and assists custodians in their responsibilities regarding their assigned RSSs or RGDs
  • Pipelines and Hiring - A program working on recruiting, onboarding, and deploying Radiation Professionals to meet mission critical staffing needs


HP Field Coordinator 2: $106,400 - $176,000
As a Health Physic Field Coordinator (HPFC) 2 within RPP-PROG the successful candidate will apply standard health physics principles, theories, concepts and techniques to support laboratory needs and develop professional expertise, especially relating to the following tasks.

  • Provide technical guidance to radiation protection technicians and other staff;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of technical basis documents, training, policies, and procedures;
  • Conduct basic radiation protection research; and
  • Assist in ensuring all radiological protection work, materials, processes and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  • Communicate major elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Interfaces with audit and assessment team members.
  • Coordinates input of radiological work data in accordance with reporting processes.
  • Provides technical direction for radiation protection activities of a work unit, or sub-unit, to ensure compliance with procedures and 10 CFR 835.
  • Reviews radiation documentation and develops new techniques and/or procedures to increase efficiency.
  • Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to radiation protection.
  • Ensures all results, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  • Sets scope, schedule and deliverables within the organization framework and provides day-to-day work place coordination.
  • Assists with completing New Activity ALARA Reviews or special projects assigned by RP management.


HP Field Coordinator 3: $117,200 - $195,400
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, as a HP Field Coordinator 3 within RPP-PROG the successful candidate will apply standard health physics principles, theories, concepts and techniques to support laboratory needs and develop professional expertise, especially relating to the following tasks.

  • Provide radiological safety-related technical support, technical assistance and guidance on basic radiological control problems, recommend corrective actions (including changes in the work environment), provide engineering controls, and perform dose or shielding calculations;
  • Provides radiation protection support for complex radiological work, including workplace surveillance and analysis/interpretation of radiological data.
  • Act as a lead person or technical advisor on small to medium projects related to radiation protection;
  • Sets scope, schedule and deliverables within the organization framework and provides day-to-day work place coordination.
  • Researches, assembles, and/or evaluates information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting radiation protection policies or programs; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.
  • Interfaces with audit and assessment team members and independently performs or is the functional lead for audits and assessments (e.g. management self-assessment).
  • Independently completes New Activity ALARA Reviews or special projects assigned by RP management.

Minimum Job Requirements:


HP Field Coordinator 2 - The successful candidate shall be able to meet the minimum job requirements listed below:

  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of radiological controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements. Working knowledge of radiological safety policies, practices, and procedures in at least one area of health physics (e.g. accelerators, reactors, actinides, dosimetry, instrumentation, etc.).
  • Extensive experience with radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control, dosimetry, calibration of instrumentation and other health physics activities.
  • In depth knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection. Working knowledge of health physics.
  • Demonstrated experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection.
  • Skill to conceptualize and communicate major elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Skill in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety/protection reports.

Additional Job Requirements for HP Field Coordinator 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Technical expertise with nuclear material radiation protection principles, practices and ability to implement those principles in at least one area of health physics (e.g. accelerators, reactors, actinides, dosimetry, instrumentation, etc.)
  • Extensive experience with radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control, dosimetry, calibration of instrumentation and other health physics activities.
  • Advanced-level problem solving skills, analytical skills and the ability to execute special assignments or procedure development consistent with radiation protection regulatory drivers.
  • Advanced-level knowledge and experience with radiological controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience responding to radiological incidents and emergencies.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection.
  • High-level skill to conceptualize and communicate major elements of radiation control procedures to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Experience generating concise and accurate reports and presentation of radiological safety/protection reports to peer and managers in the directorate.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Laboratory's radiological safety policies, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection. Demonstrated significant knowledge of Rad Protection reporting systems
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Access or Excel for report generation, presentation and trending. Experience with the development of appropriate corrective measures with customers.
  • Knowledge of applicable DOE orders and technical standards related to radiation protection.

Education/Experience at HP Field Coordinator 2 level: Position requires Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Business, or related field and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at HP Field Coordinator 3 level:
Position requires Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Business, or related field and 8 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2A:
Requires a High School Degree and 3 years of Nuclear Experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with applicable RP software (e.g. Monte Carlo or Deterministic Transport codes, Sentinel, VSDS, LMS learning programs, or database systems)
  • Working knowledge of Operational Health Physics, especially related to plutonium and accelerator facilities
  • MS in Health Physics, Radiation Protection or related field
  • ABHP certification or progress towards an ABHP certification
  • NRRPT
  • TSQP qualified.

Work Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
