    Position Summary

    The Health Information Technician is responsible for maintaining accurate, organized, and complete health information records. This role reviews and prepares medical records and health information forms, compiles statistical reports, files and retrieves health information records, and ensures documentation is complete and properly maintained. The position also coordinates with other departments regarding health information record procedures and provides information from records when appropriate.

    What You'll Do

    • Review, catalog, and check medical reports for completeness
    • Organize medical reports for placement in health information files
    • Review charts to ensure required reports and signatures are present
    • Prepare charts and health information forms for new admissions
    • Prepare requests for specific reports or certificates
    • Compile and type daily and monthly statistical reports, including census, Medicaid days, admissions, discharges, and length of stay
    • File reports and maintain health information records, logs, and filing systems
    • Retrieve health information records as needed
    • Provide information from health information records after determining the appropriateness of the request
    • Coordinate with other departments regarding health information records procedures

    Requirements & Qualifications

    • Three courses or 9 months of experience in records management
    • One course or 3 months of experience in medical terminology
    • One course or 3 months of experience in typing
    • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Knowledge of health information technology and medical terminology
    • Knowledge of regulations governing medical record keeping and confidentiality of patient information
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify missing or inaccurate medical record information
    • Ability to proofread medical reports and recognize errors
    • Ability to gather, organize, and classify information accurately
    • Proficiency with word processing and standard office equipment
