FLOYD COUNTY HEAD START BIRTH TO FIVE JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Health Assistant SUPERVISOR: School Nurse

(Hourly Employee 48W/49W & 40H)

This job description is a record of the essential functions of the listed job. The job description provides the employee, administration, human resources, applicants, and other agencies with a clear understanding of the job. I. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

A. Policy and Procedure Area

i. Collaborate with parents and providers to secure follow up/treatment, exams, and an ongoing source of medical and dental care within 30 days of the entry into the Head Start program.

ii. Assess sick children, including those with head lice and provide isolation when appropriate, but never leaving a sick child alone.

iii. Assist with the administration and storage of medications, ensuring proper policies and procedures are followed.

iv. Assist in meal preparation and serving in the absence of kitchen personnel.

v. Assist with parent trainings and workshops in the area of health/nutrition/safety.

vi. Assist with enrollment of participants into the program, helping to secure all needed health screenings, exams and information and document into the data tracking program.

vii. Complete appropriate referrals to community agencies/resources based on the health needs of the children and parents.

viii. Complete home visits under the direction of the supervisor.

ix. Ordering supplies under direction of direct supervisor following procedures and comparison shopping

x. Collaborate with the Supervisor in implementing developmentally appropriate health and nutrition experiences for classroom activities.

xi. Collaborate cooperatively with NAFC School System as directed by Supervisor.

xii. Collaborate with health assistant, home visitors, advocates and teachers to ensure all health needs are being communicated with the family.

B. Monitor, Tracking, and Record Keeping

i. Assist in the implementation of all early childhood health services:

  1. Screenings-initial within 45 days of enrollment into the Head Start program and/or as directed

  2. Maintain children's health records and assure confidentiality of these records.

  3. Maintain height and weight measurements on each child as directed.

ii. Assist in maintaining USDA records: CACFP enrollment forms.

iii. Inventory and restock first aid kits and supplies as needed.

iv. Conduct CACFP site reviews as needed.

v. Maintain an ongoing system of health tracking via written files and computer files.

vi. Provide complete documentation monthly

C. Other Health Responsibilities

i. Other related duties as assigned and explained by the Health Manager, including but not limited to, virtual duties.

III. QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES)

a. High School diploma required. C.N.A. or Associates in Medical/Health preferred.

b. Highly organized with the ability to work unsupervised to accomplish tasks as needed.

c. Attention to detail, with accuracy in recordkeeping.

d. Dependability, punctuality, flexibility and time management skills are required.

e. Hold or obtain a First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of hire and maintain current certifications.

f. Ability to communicate with children, parents, community providers and staff in a professional manner.

g. Ability to safely and physically transport a preschool/toddler/infant child; vision and hearing adequate to supervise children.

h. Ability to be flexible; work as a member of a cooperative team, or independently when needed.

i. Computer literate, with skills sufficient to work in the tracking system and generate letters, etc.
