Summary:\n \nThe primary purpose is to provide the teaching and secretarial staff with help in the event of a sick or injured child.\n \nThe Health Room Assistant also maintains the permanent health records. The Health Room Assistant is directly\n \nresponsible to the building principals in conjunction with the school nurse. The Health Room Assistant is a\n \nparaprofessional and functions dependently as supervised and directed by the building principal, using procedures\n \nspecified by the school nurse. The Health Room Assistant will not perform any duties for which he/she has not been\n \nproperly trained by the school nurse. They must be able to demonstrate the task to be performed.\n \nEssential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned\n \n? Provide assistance and supervision to students as outlined in Individualized Healthcare Plans. (IHP)\n \n? Documents all students and staff that comes to clinic.\n \n? Assist the school nurse in carrying out the school health program plan.\n \n? Provide only basic first aid as outlined by the Red Cross and the American Academy of Pediatricians.\n \n? Check all the students presenting themselves in the health room according to the guidelines outlined in the\n \nDoctor's Standing Orders prepared for the Fayette County School Corporation.\n \n? Administer medications to students in school according to Indiana State Law and under the guidelines of FCSC\n \npolicies and procedures.\n \n? Notify the school nurse of the following situations: hospitalized students, unidentified rashes, unusual\n \ncomplaints, signs or symptoms, animal bites, or possible exposure of BBP by a student or employee.\n \n? Immediately report the following emergencies to the school nurse.\n \na. Any significant change in health status of handicapped students that occur while at school or on the bus.\n \nExamples include but are not limited to: seizure, significant loss of motor function, severe pain, and\n \nabnormal behavior.\n \nb. Any health related situation in which the student's life is endangered. Examples include but are not limited\n \nto: severe bleeding, anaphylaxis (allergic reactions), choking, amputation, diabetic reactions, and\n \nrespiratory arrest.\n \n? Assist the school nurse in maintaining all permanent health records.\n \n? Perform clerical responsibilities such as telephone contact of families, filing, checking, and requisitioning\n \nsupplies from the school nurse.\n \n? Maintain a safe, pleasant health room environment.\n \n? Provide accident report forms to the appropriate staff and follow-up to make sure the report is completed and\n \nfiled in the school office with the school nurse and/or principal.\n \n? Be knowledgeable of school emergency drills, safety and accident prevention programs.\n \n? Notify the school nurse of any marked deviation in any screening result.\n \n? The Health Room Assistant must notify the building principal when unable to be at school.\n \n? Health forms and parental notification by mail is made under supervision of the nurse.\n \n? Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal.\n \nQualification Requirements:\n \nTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Trained and current certification in First Aid and C.P.R. and a commitment to be\n \ntrained and to keep current and certified. Hold a valid Indiana Driver's License. Must be able to maintain\n \nconfidentiality and show a genuine concern for the well-being of our school age children.\n \nLanguage Skills:\n \nAbility to read, comprehend, and follow doctor prescriptions, general health periodicals, journals, technical or safety\n \nprocedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to complete standard reports and correspondence. Ability to\n \neffectively present and respond to questions from parents, staff, or students.\n \nMathematical Skills:\n \nAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and\n \ndecimals. Ability to apply such concepts to practical situations.\n \nReasoning Ability:\n \nAbility to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to accept and\n \nutilize supervision by the supervisors and also need to recognize the limits, constraints, and job responsibilities of the\n \nposition.\n \nOther Skills and Abilities:\n \nAbility to operate a computer and related software. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students,\n \nstaff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Must have\n \ndependable transportation. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and school board\n \npolicies.\n \nPhysical Demands:\n \nThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully\n \nperform the essential functions of this job. The employee will\n \noccasionally reach forward or above the head, bend and twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person.\n \nEmployee must have the ability to visit various buildings in the district. The employee must occasionally lift and/or\n \nmove and push up to 90 pounds such as students and students in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this\n \njob include close vision, distance vision, and depth perceptions.\n\n
