Job Description
The Health and Safety Specialist works closely with the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) manager to inspect and evaluate equipment, processes, and work areas across a large campus to ensure compliance with government safety regulations and industry standards. This role recommends and helps implement improvements to protect workers, develops and delivers safety training, and creates written programs that prevent health problems and incidents while strengthening the overall safety culture.
Responsibilities
- Inspect and evaluate equipment, processes, and work areas throughout the campus to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations and industry standards.
- Conduct safety audits of facilities to identify existing or potential incident and health hazards, determine appropriate corrective or preventive measures, and follow up to verify that these measures are implemented effectively.
- Investigate accidents and incidents to identify root causes and develop strategies and recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Perform Job Hazard Analyses to identify risks associated with specific tasks and recommend appropriate controls.
- Implement and help manage safety programs, including but not limited to lockout/tagout, crane safety, respirator use, confined space entry, forklift safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other relevant safety programs.
- Plan, develop, and implement safety training programs for supervisors and employees to ensure compliance with standards and to enhance the organization's safety culture.
- Prepare and deliver PowerPoint safety training presentations and related training materials.
- Assist with new employee safety orientation and ongoing employee safety training to ensure consistent understanding of safety expectations and procedures.
- Support the development and achievement of annual departmental safety goals and initiatives.
- Interface with colleagues at all levels of the facility and provide safety leadership, guidance, and support to promote safe work practices.
- Maintain accurate safety records, documentation, and reports related to audits, incidents, training, and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with the EH&S team to continuously improve environmental health and safety programs, procedures, and performance.
Essential Skills
- Degree and/or OSHA certification.
- Minimum of 5 years or more of relevant experience in health and safety or environmental health and safety.
- Specific knowledge of health and safety regulations, including state and federal requirements.
- Experience with OSHA safety standards and practices.
- Hands-on experience conducting safety audits and inspections.
- Experience delivering safety training and safety orientation programs.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and guide others on safety matters.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with colleagues across the facility.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of environmental health and safety practices, including hazardous waste and environmental safety procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Chemical knowledge is a plus.
- Experience supporting or implementing programs such as lockout/tagout, crane safety, respirator programs, confined space entry, forklift safety, and PPE programs.
- Experience conducting Job Hazard Analyses and developing corrective actions.
- Ability to prepare clear and engaging training materials and presentations.
- Strong reporting and documentation skills related to safety audits, incidents, and corrective actions.
- Comfort working on a large campus and engaging with diverse operational areas.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $70.00/hr.
