The School Health Aide provides basic health services and administrative support to ensure the well-being of students and staff. Under the supervision of a school nurse or administrator, the Health Aide assists with first aid, medication distribution, health screenings, and student health record management. They also monitor students with minor illnesses or injuries and communicate with parents and staff as needed. This role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work with children in a caring and professional manner.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties as assigned):
- Administer first aid to students and staff for minor injuries and illnesses.
- Monitor students for signs of illness and follow established protocols for sending them home.
- Dispense medications according to district policy and physician instructions.
- Assist students with chronic health conditions (e.g., diabetes, asthma, allergies) under supervision.
- Provide care for acute and chronic injury/illness needs of students by following established DPI (Department of Public Instruction), Individualized Health Plans, and MAPS policies and procedures
- Keep accurate health records and update student medical files.
- Document all health office visits and notify parents/guardians as needed.
- Assist with vision, hearing, and other health screenings.
- Track and ensure compliance with immunization requirements.
- Effectively communicate with parents, school staff, and district nurse as needed regarding student health needs
- Notify parents/guardians when students need further medical attention.
- Work with teachers and staff to support students with medical needs in the classroom.
- Follow infection control procedures and assist with disease prevention efforts.
- Ensure the health office is clean, organized, and stocked with necessary supplies
- Supervise, assist and/or provide direct care to students to manage chronic health conditions such as diabetic care (carb counting, blood glucose checks, insulin injection, insulin pumps, etc.)
- Cover the secretary's lunch and break (may be required)
- Supervision such as recess and/or lunchroom duty (may be required)
- Attend professional development days as requested
- Collaborate with school team to best meet health needs of individual students in multi-disciplinary approach
- Other student specific health related needs as directed by school nurse
- Adhere to individual health plans
- Active participant in building level HEAT teams
- Other duties as assigned
The ideal candidate will have experience working with students of varying abilities, patience, understanding of how young learners grow, a desire to be part of a team, and a willingness to be flexible.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and move frequently throughout the school day, including responding quickly to medical situations.
- Ability to lift and assist students (up to 50 lbs.), including helping students who may need support with mobility or medical equipment.
- Ability to administer medications, perform first aid, and use medical equipment with precision.
- Sufficient visual acuity and hearing ability to assess student health conditions and respond effectively.
- Ability to remain calm and focused in emergency situations and provide compassionate care to students.
