  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Ability to communicate and understand verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Experience in working in any of the following: custodial, hospitality, environmental services, warehouse, production, or facilities maintenance.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry items weighing up to 30 lbs. unassisted and 50 pounds assisted.
  • Walk 3-5 miles daily and access all areas of the building in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising staff members.
  • Experience providing professional cleaning methods and techniques, including measuring and mixing cleaning chemicals.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Bilingual, English & Spanish.
  • Ability to provide excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Job Description

The Head Custodian position provides leadership, coordination, and supervision of custodial operations at Texas State Housing Facilities to ensure a clean and safe environment. The head custodian supervises full-time staff that service student residential facilities.

Job Duties

Custodial Services:

  • Directly supervise a custodial staff team and perform various cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning windows, and removing trash.
  • Provide floor care, including shampooing carpets, carpet extraction, using automatic scrubbers, and stripping and finishing floors.
  • Ensure that assigned facilities are maintained in a clean and safe condition

On-Call & Emergency Management

  • Serve as a member of the departmental on-call rotation to provide support to students after hours.
  • Provide emergency response and clean up for floods and other custodial emergencies. Fill in as required for other crew members and substitute for absent co-workers as needed. Perform set-ups and breakdowns for special events.
  • Mandatory overtime may be required with little or no advance notice.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Administration:

  • Performs quality control inspections and documentation.
  • Manage staff performance through 1:1s, team meetings, and annual evaluations.
  • Process and review time reports, inspection reports, absence documentation.
