JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Program Head Coach - High School Reports to: District Athletic Director Supervises: A staff of high school assistant coaches, mid school coaches, student-athletes Work Site: Assigned school/program

Job Goal: The Program Head Coach must demonstrate strong leadership in player and staff development, integrity, sportsmanship, and character development. Qualified candidates should possess strong communication and organizational skills. They must demonstrate exceptional knowledge of the skills and strategies of their sport as it pertains to the policies of New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA).

General Follows and upholds the policies and mission statement of Bloomfield School District. Comply with all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, Public Education Department guidelines, and local/state/federal laws and the NMAA.

Foster among student-athletes, coaches, and spectators an appreciation of the values of athletics, a desire to perform at the highest levels, an attitude of good sportsmanship, and a sense of pride in self, team, school, family, and community. This job also requires the head coach to assume a major role in the development of our youth as future leaders. Positive communication strategies, organizational skills, and safety awareness are key requirements.

Emphasis on the importance of academic excellence and assist in monitoring and maintaining high academic standards for members of the program. Become actively involved with assisting team members with applications to post-high school programs, college, vocational training, or the military.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the training, conditioning, and performance of the program and lead and supervise the assistant coaches in their efforts with teams assigned to them.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of sports-specific strength and conditioning programs and execute such programs during the off-season within the parameters of NMAA regulations.
  • Promote the program within the school and community.
  • Bloomfield School District reserves the right to extend the deadline and update qualification requirements without notice.
  • Perform other duties related to the position of head athletic coach as requested by the District Athletic Director.

Qualifications

  • Valid state coach certification.
  • Employment as a teacher in school district. Preferred.
  • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Previous high school coaching experience required.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport.
  • The head coach must have knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and willingness to continue to learn and examine new ideas pertinent to the assigned sport.
  • Certification: NFHS First Aid Health and Safety, NFHS Bullying, NFHS Protecting students from abuse, NFHS Concussion in sports, CPRAED certification, NFHS Football tackling (football applicants only) on file.
  • External candidate must have satisfactory background check. Non-refundable fee.
  • Valid Drivers License.
  • Maintain confidentiality both verbally and written form of each students record as well as coaches information and athletic personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all coaches in the program are certified, licensed, and cleared by BSD Human Resources department.
  • Ensures that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed.
  • Plan, organize, advertise, and conduct tryouts for the program, inform the district athletic director and participants of the final selection process, and maintain the integrity of the selection process.
  • Consult with the district athletic director and provide information regarding any off-season training programs, including scheduling dates for summer camps, coaches clinic schedule, rules for season, two-a-day practices, scrimmages, try-out schedule, criteria, etc.
  • Works with the district athletic director in preparing practice and game or competition schedules, updating athletic rosters onto the RankOne platform before the first game or competition, any changes to student-athlete information on the roster, inventories final season statistics, and alphabetical list of award winners immediately following the season.
  • Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork in a specified time and manner.
  • Ensure that all athletes have valid sports physical examinations before they can participate.
  • Ensure that proper forms, insurance, attendance, medical are obtained and current, and that all student-athletes are academically eligible.
  • Make sure that all athletes have baseline Impact Tests prior to first scrimmage.
  • Hold informational parent meetings at the beginning of each season for all levels.
  • Work directly with school certified athletic trainer in reporting injuries, teaching precautions and procedures to ensure staff/student-athlete safety and injury prevention.
  • Complete BSD Accident report for any athlete injured within 24 hours, even if student-athlete does not see a physician.
  • Creates a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of student-athletes.
  • Ensures a certified coach is present at all team practices and games.
  • Ensures that proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms and updates inventories are adhered to.
  • Adheres to all financial policies of BSD regarding collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.
  • Make recommendations regarding the purchase of uniforms, equipment, and arrange and schedule bus transportation with the athletic office for athletic participants, athletes, team managers, and certified athletic trainer and/or student trainers.
  • Head Coach will travel with student-athletes on the team bus both to and from competitions, if unable to, must have an assistant coach present on the bus.
  • Enforces discipline policies and emphasizes sportsmanship and healthy lifestyle.
  • Supervises student-athletes in locker rooms at home and away games and ensure appropriate behavior.
  • Checks and secures all office, locker rooms, storage room, outside doors, and all lights after last player leaves after games and practices. Head Coach may delegate this responsibility to an Assistant Coach.
  • Ensures that appropriate rules and regulations regarding the conduct and eligibility of athletic activities and student-athletes are explained and followed.
  • Always maintains a safe environment and facilities for student-athletes.

Staff Responsibilities

  • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to local policy.
  • Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and at seasons end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.
  • Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Perform such other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Administrative Duties

  • Assists the athletic office in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility.
  • Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment site.
  • Knowledge of electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentation, and telecommunications.
  • Advises the district athletic director and recommends method or procedural changes.
  • Utilize and monitor RankOne Sport system for assigned sport.

Responsibilities of Students

  • Provides training, rules, and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete and who is considered a participant.
  • Gives constant attention to a student-athletes grades and conduct.
  • By his/her presence at all practices, games, and while traveling, aids guidance, and safeguards for each participant.
  • Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Completes reports of all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to Athletic office within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary, and contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.

Finance and Equipment

  • Participates in the budget process with the department as requested.
  • Recommends equipment guidelines as to type, style, color, or technical specifications.
  • Is responsible for operating within budget appropriations.
  • Is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.
  • Arranges for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitors and assigns equipment rooms and coaches offices.
  • Permits athletes to be in authorized areas at the appropriate times.
  • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and checks on general cleanliness of the facility.
  • Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building when custodians are not on duty.
  • Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.

Public Relations

  • Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre-season meetings.
  • Promotes the sport within the school by recruiting athletes that are not participating in sports.
  • Promotes sports outside the school through news media, non-scholastic Youth activities.
  • Ensures quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintains good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.

Physical Job Requirements

  • Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying up to 50lbs, climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, driving a vehicle, traveling long distances, writing, typing, word processing, reading, researching information, and effective communication skills.

Safety and Health

  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
  • Refer athletes with possible infections to a healthcare provider such as team physician, athletic trainer, school nurse, or primary care.
  • Instruct athletes with a potential or confirmed infection or open wound to avoid using whirlpools or therapy pools not cleaned between athletes and other common-use water facilities like swimming pools until infections and wounds are healed.
  • Review and implement cleaning and disinfecting guidelines-recommended by CDC
