The Portage Community School District is seeking candidates for an elementary school counselor. The school counselor will lead and assist in the implementation of strategies, practices, and initiatives intended to promote a positive school culture that is inclusive and responsive to all members of the school community.

The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding classroom guidance, group and individual student counseling, strategies and support for classroom teachers working with students with social emotional and academic deficits. The counselor also has responsibility for writing curriculum and supporting the implementation of SEL (social emotional/learning standards). The successful candidate will possess the ability to work with a variety of students, staff and parents, excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational and time management skills and a growth mindset.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supports the implementation of the counseling curriculum, SEL standards, and other curricula designed to promote social emotional development of students

  2. Counsels small groups of students in various areas (friendship, self esteem etc.) to promote social/emotional development

  3. Develops and implements programs and services intended to build a healthy school climate for all members of the school community

  4. Instructs and supports Zones, Mind Up and other programs.

  5. Develops and implements activities to support transition of students and families new to the building

  6. Refers students and families to outside agencies and resources

  7. Responds to crisis situations when appropriate

  8. Participate and support the district multi-tiered system of supports

  9. Maintains current and appropriate resources related to trauma informed care, mental health, and social emotional and behavioral intervention strategies.

  10. Participate and contribute to building student support team.
