Job Overview Position: Guardianship Attorney (Attorney III)Agency: Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC)Location: San Antonio, TX (may also be Houston)Salary: $8,581.66 – $9,460.45 per monthSchedule: Full‑time, Day shiftTelework: EligibleTravel: Up to 10%Responsibilities Provide direct representation in guardianship cases, including trial preparation and court appearances.Support other attorneys in guardianship cases, collections, and psychoactive medication hearings (PMH) for State Supported Living Centers.Represent the agency in administrative hearings, collection matters, and PMH matters for assigned state facilities.Prepare and review legal opinions, briefs, proposals, and reports.Conduct research on policy and process questions and draft legislative bills, amendments, agency rules, and policies.Advisory: Assist staff with legal matters and interpretation of agency policy, state and federal regulations.Other related work as assigned.Essential Job Functions Attend work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy.(30%) Advise staff on legal matters and agency policy.(15%) Assist in preparing guardianship cases for trial.(15%) Assist in preparing collections and PMH cases for trial or administrative hearings.(10%) Provide research for policy and process questions.(10%) Prepare legal opinions, briefs, proposals, and reports.(10%) Research, draft, or assist in drafting legislative bills, amendments, agency rules, and policies.(10%) Perform related work as assigned.Qualifications Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.Certified guardian‑ship attorney with the Texas Bar (Or willing to obtain certification).Experience in guardianship, probate, collections, PMH, mental health, intellectual disability, criminal prosecution or defense, or work with county or district attorneys is preferred.One–two years of related legal experience preferred but not required.Benefits Full‑time employees receive 100% paid health insurance, a defined benefit pension plan, generous time‑off benefits, and other career‑advancement opportunities.
