JOB TITLE: GROUNDSKEEPER I

DEPARTMENT: GROUNDSKEEPING

GRADE: D (RATE OF PAY: $33,321.60 - $40,580.80 / YR)

JOB SUMMARY:

The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Director of Groundskeeping. This person will perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of parks, open spaces, grounds, turf and related facilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Inspect, wash, and perform routine maintenance of drinking fountains and restrooms.
  • Operate weedeaters, riding and push mowers.
  • Sweep, wash, paint, and repair or replace outdoor tables and slabs.
  • Plant lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Seed, fertilize, apply top dressing and soil conditioning, water; apply pest and weed control in parks and open spaces.
  • Collect and dispose of solid waste from buildings and grounds; pick up litter from premises.
  • Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for various functions and programs, prepare facilities for program use.
  • Install and maintain goal posts and nets for sports facilities, such as soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis and basketball.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes required.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Some knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in ground maintenance; some knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
