GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSEThe Grounds Maintenance Laborer is responsible for the overall upkeep and maintenance of the grounds of industrial, commercial, or public property such as buildings, camp and picnic grounds, parks, playgrounds, greenhouses, athletic fields, military bases and runways. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS/DUTIES OF THE POSITIONMow grass, using walking -type or riding mowers (less than 2000 lbs)Trim hedges and edges around walkways, flowerbeds, and wellsPrune shrubs, and trees to shape and improve growth using hedge trimmers, clippers, and edging toolsSpray lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer or insecticidePlant grass, flowers, trees, and shrubsWater lawn and shrubs when needed using hose or activating sprinkler systemCollect and burn or cart away leaves, paper, or other litterRemove snow from walkways, driveways, roads, or parking lots using a shovel and snow blowerSpread salt on walkways and other areas if neededRepair and paint fences, gates, benches, tables, guardrails, and outbuildingsAssist in the repair of roads, sidewalks, buildings, and mechanical equipmentMay clean comfort stations, offices, workshop areas, and parking lots by sweeping, washing, mopping, and polishingAny and all other duties assigned by your Supervisor/Manager/Lead JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES EXPERIENCE: Three to five years' experience in lawn and pavement care/maintenance in an industrial setting is preferred. SKILLS:Must have good communication skills, have the ability to read, write, speak, and understand EnglishMust be able to read and comply with work orders concerning grounds service and maintenanceThe ability to use a variety of tools, including mowers, edgers, clippers, wheel barrows, and hand tools safelyMust be able to alert oneself to safety hazards and have a method of communication so that the individual and those around can understand and respond ADDITIONAL:Hands-on ability to work in a team-oriented environment.Required to work independently and with limited supervisionComply with all policies, safety guidelines, and procedures; follow all contract specifications and maintain complianceMust be able to maintain regular and acceptable attendance, follow directions, interact well with co-workers, understand and follow posted work rules/proceduresMust have a government security clearance or ability to obtain upon hire EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONHS Diploma or GED requiredValid Driver's License PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSThe work is performed primarily outdoors so exposure to various temperatures and weather including snow, sleet, rain, wind, dust, dirt, and the like are possible. Must be able to work in hot or cold temperatures. This position requires lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, and pushing or pulling up to 75 pounds, with or without assistance. Constant walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time may be required. Reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing and balancing may be needed. WORK HOUR REQUIREMENT This position is full time (40 hours per week), seasonal; and may include some shift work including Saturdays and Sundays. Ability to work overtime as needed.
