Wayne-Westland Community Schools is located in the metropolitan Detroit area, between Ann Arbor and Detroit. Our staff provides the very best educational opportunities for approx. 10,000 students from Westland, Wayne, Canton, Livonia, Garden City, Dearborn Heights, Inkster, and Romulus. The Wayne -Westland Community School district is comprised of ten elementary schools (K-5), three middle schools (6-8), and two high schools (9-12). We also have an early childhood center, an u ltra-modern facility for career/technical training, an alternative high school, and a thriving online program. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned

  • Adhere to the rules and guidelines of the Great Start Readiness Program implementation manual
  • Plan and execute developmentally appropriate activities and lessons according to the HighScope Curriculum and Key Development Indicators in all content areas
  • Create a HighScope learning environment that is developmentally appropriate for preschool children, and meets the requirements of the PQA
  • Follow all HighScope recommended daily routine and teaching strategies
  • Execute and maintain Michigan DHS licensing rule requirements
  • Assess children and submit data documenting child development as requested, including, but not limited to COR Advantage and Ages and Stages
  • Plan and conduct parent teacher conferences and/or home visits as required
  • Establish and maintain positive rapport with parents
  • Prepare and conduct parent orientation
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for program paraprofessionals and volunteers
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence, maintain personal documentation of all training, submit to supervisor annually
  • Attend staff meetings when requested
  • Follow all district policies and procedures
  • Advocate for children and families
  • Regular and predictable attendance

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States
  • A valid Michigan teaching certificate and an Early Childhood Education (ZA) or Early Childhood - General and Special Education (ZS) endorsement or
  • A bachelor's degree in early childhood education or child development with a specialization in preschool teaching (The transcript will document a major rather than a minor, in child development or early childhood education).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Preferred experience and knowledge of providing a high quality early learning program environment as defined by the GSRP Implementation Requirements, the HighScope Curriculum, Program Quality Assessment (PQA) and Great Start to Quality (QRIS)
  • Preferred experience and knowledge of HighScope Curriculum and teaching strategies
  • Preferred experience and knowledge of COR Advantage Online Assessment program
  • Preferred experience and knowledge of the Preschool Quality Assessment requirements
  • Preferred experience and knowledge of and adherence to the Michigan Department of Human Services, Licensing Rules for Child Care Centers
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral language ability
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with children, parents, and staff
  • Ability to operate computers and related software

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability t o adjust focus. The employee is required to tell where sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment. The employee engages in physical management with students in order to maintain a safe environment for students and others. The employee may need to travel to different work locations. The position requires the employee to sometimes work irregular or extended work hours and meet multiple demands from several people. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with students, staff and occasionally with the public. At times, the employee may be directly responsible for the safety and well-being of young children.
