Position Summary

Target Hiring Range: $71,960.97 - $79,956.64

The Graduate Engineer is an entry-level engineer and is an Engineer in Training. The primary duties include performing plan reviews, reviewing citizen requests, and providing technical services to contractors and developers. The Graduate Engineer shall support senior staff with engineering design, technical documentation, and project management of in-house public works assignments. Performs other related work as required.

SUPERVISION

Under general supervision of the City Engineer. This position will require independent judgement and resourcefulness to interpret and apply technical information and guidelines.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide highly technical and responsible staff assistance to the City Engineer, Director of Public Works, and other support staff in the completion of their duties and responsibilities.
  • Provide timely and effective customer service to both internal and external customers. Provide technical assistance and support to other divisional professionals and City departments.
  • Read and comprehend plats, engineering plans and specifications, analyze complex engineering problems, formulate feasible solutions, build consensus, and communicate recommendations and decisions both orally and in writing. Communicate and discuss review comments and recommended corrections to plans and specifications with consulting engineers and developers.

Project Development, Design & Plan Review Duties:

  • Prepares, under the direction of the City Engineer, designs, specifications, costs and quantity estimates for a variety of public works projects including water, wastewater, paving, and drainage plans.
  • Reviews engineering plans submitted from consultants, designers, and/or other applicable parties to provide stipulations, informational, technical, and recommendation comments, ensuring compliance with applicable City rules, regulations, codes, ordinances, and/or other applicable design standards. May also assist the general public and private contractors with questions and comments.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, committees, and/or task forces to provide technical engineering information based on assigned area of responsibility. Provides expertise by reviewing and critiquing development projects and plans.
  • Creates, reviews, revises, and maintains numerous reference materials, manuals, and standards which may also include forms, checklists, reports, and/or other related information as needed.
  • Participates in amending, interpreting, and implementing City ordinances and policies to improve and provide a reasonable degree of safety in response to the changing market demands in development.
  • Use GIS system to retrieve utility and property information.

Education and Experience

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited college or university with major coursework in Civil

Engineering.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of civil engineering and construction principles and practices;
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, rules, regulations, and design standards;
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting engineering documents including plans and schematics;
  • Skilled in reading and comprehending technical or specialized materials;
  • Skilled in utilizing AutoCAD or similar design software and GIS;
  • Skilled in designing and constructing engineering plans and documents;
  • Skilled in applying independent judgement and resourcefulness to interpret and apply guidelines;
  • Skilling in prioritizing, organizing, and managing projects;
  • Skilled in gathering and analyzing information and making recommendations based on findings;
  • Skilled in operating a computer and related software applications;
  • Skilled in communicating affectively with a variety of individuals;
