Grid and Market Solutions (GMS) Application Developer role expects knowledge and experience in full stack development who can design, code, test, document, and maintain applications to meet ERCOT business requirements for suite of Electric Power Grid Applications. The suite includes Resource Integration and Ongoing Operations (RIOO) system and Net Dependable Capability and Reactive Capability (NDCRC) web applications. Adhere to software development life cycle (SDLC) processes that include full stack development, performing testing and validation of Application to deliver quality software to customers. Works closely with customers, business area subject matter experts, team members and other internal technical teams to design, develop and maintain complex ERCOT applications in support of market needs and internal corporate requirements. Uses toolsets that adhere to the frameworks of the technical stack used across the GMS division and ensures that products and solutions comply with the organization’s architectural standards JOB DUTIES Broadly applies principles, theories and concepts related to the profession. A seasoned, experienced professional with an in-depth/full understanding of area of specialization. May provide recommendations regarding issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Wide latitude for decisions within assignments, programs, and projects; impact is generally limited to the project or department. Acts as a resource to advise and may at times a lead the work of lower-level professional and/or support employees. Generally, represents the department on projects and may perform in a project leadership role. ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES Performs all work according to applicable rules and regulations, including regulatory requirements and organizational policies and procedures. Works closely with business users and internal stakeholders to gather, review, and understand functional and non-functional requirements, proposing design improvements where appropriate. Designs, develops, tests, and maintains web-based applications using front-end and/or back-end technologies. Participates in requirements, design, and architecture review discussions with business users and technical teams. Develops and manages source code using Atlassian Bitbucket source control tools. Adheres to Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) standards and change management processes for all software releases. Understands and follows GMS application release processes and best practices to deliver software changes seamlessly. Participates in interdepartmental meetings and presents software design, implementation details, and application enhancements. Analyzes, troubleshoots, and resolves application issues by performing root cause analysis and delivering software solutions. Participates in developing design specifications that comply with ERCOT architectural standards and blueprints. Researches, evaluates, and incorporates new technologies and tools to improve product development and engineering efficiency. Resolves customer issues and responds to enhancement requests. Assists in developing product user manuals and technical documentation. Works closely with GMS Production Support and other teams to provide technical support for supported applications. Automates software development processes using CI/CD tools such as Bitbucket, Maven, and Jenkins. Assists in developing tools, processes, and procedures that improve software development and organizational efficiency. Leverages AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, GPT, and Claude to accelerate software development, testing, code quality, and engineering productivity. Works with data sets and data pipelines, including Airflow and Databricks, and analyzes third-party software security vulnerabilities to implement security patches. Performs code reviews and promotes coding standards, best practices, and design patterns. Performs manual and automated unit, regression, and integration testing using appropriate testing frameworks. Works closely with project management teams to ensure successful delivery of application changes through testing and production deployment. Collaborates with project managers, architects, developers, usability engineers, business users, market participants, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure quality product delivery. Assists in providing development metrics, code statistics, and implementation of standardized development methodologies. Ensures products and solutions comply with organizational architectural standards. Focuses on application and system design while providing technical guidance and mentoring to team members. Partners with technical leads to define solutions for complex business problems and enforce engineering standards. Optimizes applications, leads root cause analysis for production issues, and drives automation initiatives. Organizes and coordinates application planning, design, architecture, development, testing, and integration activities. Advises management on technical direction and development goals for the GMS Technology Development team. Assists with project planning and delivery across all phases of application development. Serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), advising, mentoring, and guiding team members and cross-functional stakeholders. Communicates effectively through strong written and verbal communication skills. Works on moderately complex issues requiring in-depth analysis and creative problem-solving. Level Lead (In Addition to Senior) Provides strategic technical leadership and cross-team coordination. Establishes engineering standards, architectural patterns, and evaluates emerging technologies. Serves as the primary technical partner for Business/Product Owners, translating strategic goals into technical roadmaps. Drives a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and engineering best practices across multiple teams. Assists engineering teams in resolving complex technical challenges and delivering effective solutions. Mentors senior developers in software engineering best practices, object-oriented design, design patterns, and application frameworks. Maintains expert knowledge of ERCOT Nodal Protocols, PUCT rulings, NERC Reliability Standards, and CIP requirements, and mentors staff on regulatory compliance. All Levels -- Preferred SKILLS Messaging Services: Tibco JMS, AMQ, KAFKA Experience with CIM/XML model-based tools. Power industry experience in grid and market arena preferably with software vendors or ISO/utilities. AI: Proficiency in Python, knowledge in ML fundamentals, PyTorch/TensorFlow frameworks, experience with deep learning models, hands-on experience with LLM’s, prompt engineering and RAG architecture/frameworks. Data Pipelines: Hands-on experience with data pipelines and large-scale data processing. SKILL REQUIREMENTS Back-End: Java (17+), Spring Boot/Spring MVC. Front-End: Angular (v12+, RxJS, NGRX, Signal store/NGRX Signals) or React (Hooks, Context API/Redux), TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3/SASS. Scripting Language: Python, Shell Scripting Database: Experience with relational (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and understanding of NoSQL (MongoDB or Cassandra). APIs: RESTful API design, JSON, and OpenAPI/Swagger documentation. Tools: Git (GitHub/Bitbucket), Maven, and IDEs (IntelliJ, VS Code), Ansible for deployments. Operating Systems: Windows, Linux. Containerization: Docker (building images, managing containers, Docker Compose). Cloud Technologies: Experience with Azure/AWS Experience with advanced usage of AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, GPT and Claude LLMs for architectural brainstorming, debugging, software development, refactoring, automated unit and integration testing Experience with advanced prompt engineering to ensure reliable AI responses Knowledge in processing datasets using Databricks and Airflow REQUIRED EXPERIENCE Senior Level Engineer - Requires minimum 5 years related work experience in excess of degree requirements Lead Level Engineer - Requires minimum 8 years related work experience in excess of degree requirements Salary and level will be based on overall experience as determined by ERCOT. The ERCOT Engineer Development Program (EDP) is a 12- to 16-month, self-paced program geared toward entry-level engineers looking to start a career in the power industry. Through the program, an EDP Engineer receives one-on-one mentoring, specialized training, and exposure to the work performed by each of the engineering groups at ERCOT. The program allows engineers to develop the fundamental skills necessary to reach their full potential while gaining an understanding of the types of engineering work ERCOT has to offer. EDP management supports participants each step of the way as they progress through the program. Upon completion, graduates are placed as full-time engineers within one of ERCOT’s engineering groups. The GMS Development Program (GDP) is designed to provide entry-level and early career professionals with the skills necessary to become successful Power System and Computer Engineers. The program, which is based in ERCOT’s Grid and Market Solutions (GMS) Department, will provide experience in day-to-day work and instruction in the fundamentals of electric power systems engineering, grid and market applications, software programming, and IT service and operations management. The GDP offers one-on-one mentoring, training, field trips, and special assignments. These assignments allow GDP engineers to become knowledgeable and familiar with the various business areas at ERCOT. The GMS leadership team prepares GDP engineers for a future career at ERCOT in power systems and computer engineering. The System Operator Development Program (ODP) is intended to combine real-time daily operations in an exciting work setting to prepare participants with the vital skills necessary to be successful in such a critical position — providing 24x7x365 on-demand support to manage the flow of electric power to more than 26 million Texas customers. If you are new to the industry, this program introduces you to the Bulk Electric System by combining introductory courses with the NERC Certification Exam Preparation Program in preparation to pass the NERC Certification Exam.
