SUMMARY:

Performs under general supervision of the Community Development Director. The GIS Technician is responsible for supporting the organization's geographic information system (GIS) operations through the creation, maintenance, and analysis of spatial and attribute data. This position provides technical assistance for mapping, data management, and spatial analysis to support departmental and organizational objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create, edit, and maintain GIS datasets, including spatial and attribute information, in accordance with established standards and procedures.

  • Produce maps, reports, and visualizations for internal and external use.

  • Perform routine spatial analysis and data queries to support planning and operational needs.

  • Collect, validate, and update GIS data from field surveys, GPS data, and external sources.

  • Ensure data accuracy, quality control, and consistency across GIS databases.

  • Maintain metadata and documentation for GIS datasets and workflows.

  • Assist with GIS database management and data integration efforts.

  • Respond to requests for maps, data, and GIS-related information from staff and stakeholders.

  • Provide basic troubleshooting and technical support related to GIS data and software.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with GPS data collection and field verification.

  • Familiarity with geo databases and spatial database management.

  • Experience with GIS automation tools such as Python or Model Builder.

  • Knowledge of GIS applications within a specific industry (e.g., utilities, transportation, planning, environmental services).

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Geospatial Science, Environmental Science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience using GIS software such as Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or QGIS

  • Working knowledge of spatial data concepts, coordinate systems, and map projections

  • Ability to interpret technical instructions and follow standardized workflows

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid NM Class D Driver's License and must be insurable by the City's insurance carrier.

  • High School Diploma or GED.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.

  • Ability to follow data standards and work flows.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public and administrative personnel.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Time management and ability to handle multiple tasks.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team..

  • Ability to interpret aerial maps.

  • Ability to interpret plans surveys, legal descriptions and construction drawings.

  • Skills in the utilization of the latest Drafting equipment.

  • Must have knowledge and understanding of importance in maintaining updated records and mapping systems.

  • Knowledge in the use of field survey equipment.

  • Ability to provide exemplary customer service.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Office based with occasional fieldwork, occasional travel.

  • Working in inclement weather conditions.

  • Working surface is on even, flat/hard and/or carpeted areas.

  • May be required to attend City Council meetings as scheduled.

  • Additional evening and weekend work may be required occasionally.

  • Mobility Factors: Walks 5% of the time, Climbs stairs 2% of the time, stands 5% of the time, sits 95% of the time.

  • Trunk: Bend Occasionally.

  • Arms: Reaches, works with arms occasionally and may require lifting or carrying light field equipment.

  • Legs: Bends, kneels, squats and walks.

  • Hands: Gross dexterity, occasionally grasp/ manipulate, frequently speed required, occasionally bilateral coordinator, eye and hand coordination.

NOTE: This position is subject to drug testing both pre-employment and random as set forth in the City of Las Vegas Drug Policy.
