General Summary
Successfully develops and supports student-athletes in the high school girls wrestling program, fostering a culture committed to academic achievement, athletic excellence, personal growth, and character development. Leads and supports a positive, educational-based athletic program that works closely with academic and administrative leaders, the Athletic Department, families, and the school community. Develops a competitive and inclusive girls wrestling program that emphasizes skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, confidence, and lifelong learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Understands and supports the School's mission, philosophy, and objectives. Knows, understands, and adheres to all rules, regulations, and philosophies established by the School, WIAA, and other applicable governing organizations.
- Establishes clear goals for the girls wrestling program and regularly evaluates progress toward those goals. Provides constructive feedback to student-athletes and coaching staff to promote continued growth and improvement.
- Provides firm, consistent, and fair discipline while demonstrating patience, empathy, and understanding when working with student-athletes, families, and colleagues.
- Provides leadership and a positive attitude that encourages maximum effort and commitment from student-athletes. Demonstrates self-control, poise, emotional stability, and professionalism in all coaching responsibilities, including practices, competitions, and interactions with opponents and officials.
- Serves as a positive role model by demonstrating professional, fair, honest, and ethical behavior in relationships with student-athletes, coaches, officials, parents/guardians, and opponents. Actively promotes student safety, dignity, inclusion, and respect.
- Demonstrates enthusiasm for girls wrestling and works collaboratively with students, parents/guardians, school personnel, and the broader school community. Supports the development of the whole student-athlete and recognizes the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of high school students.
- Maintains consistent interest in student-athletes both during the wrestling season and throughout the year, including supporting their academic success, personal development, and continued athletic growth.
- Communicates effectively and professionally with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, faculty, support staff, athletic department leadership, officials, media, and other school personnel.
- Organizes, supervises, coordinates, and evaluates practices and competitions with appropriate attention to the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of student-athletes.
- Develops and implements effective wrestling practices focused on fundamentals, technique, conditioning, strength development, strategy, competition preparation, and individual athlete development.
- Provides appropriate preparation and supervision for all practices, dual meets, tournaments, postseason competitions, team meetings, travel, weigh-ins, and other wrestling-related activities.
- Develops and utilizes appropriate scouting and preparation methods to evaluate opponents and prepare student-athletes for competition.
- Stays current with modern wrestling techniques, strategies, training methods, rules, and best practices and incorporates new approaches when appropriate.
- Participates annually in professional development opportunities, including coaching clinics, workshops, conferences, and other educational opportunities related to wrestling, coaching, student development, and athlete safety.
- Understands and implements appropriate procedures for injury prevention, recognition, and response. Promotes safe wrestling techniques and appropriate strength and conditioning practices.
- Works cooperatively with Athletic Department staff in maintaining accurate and timely records, including eligibility information, statistics, awards, schedules, transportation needs, equipment inventories, and other program documentation.
- Communicates effectively with the Athletic Department regarding program needs, scheduling concerns, injuries, disciplinary matters, unusual events, and other issues that may impact student-athletes or the wrestling program.
- Works cooperatively with the equipment coordinator to maintain, distribute, inventory, and properly care for wrestling equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
- Ensures that wrestling facilities, locker rooms, practice areas, and equipment are properly supervised, maintained, and used safely.
- Creates a compelling girls wrestling program in which student-athletes understand their roles, have meaningful opportunities for development, and feel valued as members of the team.
- Promotes a culture of inclusion and belonging within the girls wrestling program and works to create opportunities for athletes of varying experience and skill levels to participate and develop.
- Recognizes and celebrates the contributions and accomplishments of student-athletes while reinforcing the importance of teamwork, accountability, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
- Develops positive relationships with families and communicates expectations, program goals, schedules, and important information in a timely and professional manner.
- Encourages student-athletes to demonstrate leadership and service to others and supports opportunities for the wrestling program to contribute positively to the school and community.
- Participates as a positive and collaborative member of the Athletic Department and supports the overall mission and success of the school's athletic programs.
- Maximizes available resources and stays current with technology and emerging tools that can improve communication, organization, athlete development, and program management.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
