Responsibilities:
- Provides genetic education, counseling, and support to patients and/or families who have genetic disorders, birth defects, or who may be at risk for inherited conditions
- May coordinate and support research activities within area of expertise
- Assesses family and medical history and counsels patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects
- Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options and obtains informed consent from interested patients.
- Assists families in understanding genetic disorders in their families, probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks
- Charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patient
- Documents cases and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality
- Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate
- Communicates medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the patient
- Knowledge of human genetic disorders and birth defects
- Supervises, advises, and trains clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise
- Documents telephone encounters in the medical record
- Obtains informed consent from interested patients
- Documents in a timely manner according to hospital guidelines
- Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
- Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
- Regular and prompt attendance
- Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
- Related duties as assigned
Additional Information:
Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in genetic counseling from an accredited institution Required
- CGC - Certified Genetic Counselor with the American Board of Genetic Counseling Required
- Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
