Job Description
This opportunity is available to current City of Chesapeake employees only.
Public Works Operations is seeking an experienced General Supervisor to oversee crews performing the installation, maintenance, repair, and construction of City infrastructure. This position combines hands on fieldwork with leadership, planning, and administrative responsibilities to help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to established standards.
Key responsibilities include:
The ideal candidate will have experience supervising construction or maintenance crews and operating light to heavy motor equipment and related attachments. Candidates should be able to read grades from cut sheets and stations, lay out work zones, coordinate with Miss Utility, and apply knowledge of concrete and asphalt construction practices.
This position requires the ability to plan projects, identify resource needs, perform manual labor, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. The General Supervisor must also be able to maintain accurate work orders, logs, forms, records, material expenditures, equipment status, and other job related information. Experience using Kronos and Maximo is preferred.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in civil engineering, construction, mechanical trade, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of four years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards; Requires a Class A CDL at time of interview. If selected, requires tanker endorsement within 30 days of employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
