General Maintenance Worker

WORK LOCATION: 105-A Upchurch Street, Apex, NC 27502

SCHEDULE:  Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Our Public Works Department''s Solid Waste Division is seeking dependable individuals to perform essential manual labor, including collecting recycling, garbage, yard debris, leaves, and refuse. This active, hands‑on role offers daily variety as you work in both indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in extreme weather and around equipment that requires proper safety awareness. Heavy lifting and exposure to noise, machinery, and materials are part of the job, with clear supervision to guide your work. HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT:

Performs routine manual labor involving the collection of recycle, garbage, yard waste, leaves, and refuse. The employee is subject to hazards associated with public works tasks including working in both inside and outside environments, with heavy lifting, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is performed under immediate supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine the thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.

This position reports to the Solid Waste Crew Lead.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:

  • Operates or assists in operating a limb chipping machine to remove limbs and leaves from residential areas.
  • Works as a member of a refuse or trash collection crew to load trash, debris, and junked furniture and appliances from roadsides on an assigned route.
  • Assists in emptying load at landfill or transfer station.
  • Works as a member of a crew to collect leaves, grass clippings, limbs and other yard waste from residential neighborhoods.
  • Operates cart tippers on the back of rear load truck, utilizes hydraulic levers to pack debris into rear load truck and rides on the rear step while collecting on route.
  • Assists in set up and clean up for Town events.
  • Uses a variety of smartphone applications in performance of duties to track completed work and work time; uses Cityworks software application computer and/or phone to complete work order activities.
  • May assist with snow removal, natural disasters, storm response, street maintenance and work in other divisions as needed and assigned.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

WHAT SETS YOU UP FOR SUCCESS:

High School Diploma/GED and minimal (less than one year) of experience.

WHAT SETS YOU APART:

Preference will be given for Class B CDL.
