Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor, this position performs entry-level manual labor and basic operational work in support of sanitation services. The position assists with refuse collection, operates light equipment and vehicles as assigned, and performs routine tasks related to solid waste operations.

Typical Duties

Refuse Collection & Labor Support

• Performs manual refuse collection including lifting, loading, and handling of waste containers and materials.
• Assists with residential and commercial collection routes.
• Handles waste materials in accordance with established procedures.

Light Equipment & Vehicle Operation

• Operates light-duty vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks and small machinery under supervision.
• Assists with operation of sanitation equipment during collection and transport activities.
• Learns proper operation and maintenance of assigned equipment.

Route & Crew Support

• Works as part of a crew to complete assigned collection routes.
• Assists with route activities, including placement and handling of containers.
• Supports efficient completion of daily service operations.

Equipment & Worksite Maintenance

• Cleans and maintains vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
• Assists with basic servicing tasks such as fueling and cleaning equipment.
• Reports equipment issues or unsafe conditions.

Safety & Risk Management

• Follows safety procedures related to waste handling, vehicle operation, and sanitation work environments.
• Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
• Learns and follows safe work practices and procedures.

Training & Development

• Participates in training related to sanitation operations, equipment uses, and safety procedures.
• Develops skills necessary for advancement into driver or operator roles.

Other Duties

• Performs other duties as assigned in support of sanitation operations.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Licenses & Certifications

• Valid New Mexico Driver's License.
• Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within required timeframe preferred.

• Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, or manual labor practices preferred.
• Basic understanding of safety procedures and workplace practices.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work involves heavy physical activity including lifting, bending, standing, walking, and repetitive motion.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to weather, traffic, waste materials, odors, and sanitation equipment. The position requires early morning hours, repetitive physical labor, and potential overtime. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position. This position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City policies.
