Job Description / Essential Elements: Print

Teach two sections of Chemistry to 11th and 12th graders and two sections of Marine Biology to 11th and 12 graders. Co-teach Associated Student Body (ASB). Write independent study curriculum for Chemistry and Marine Biology.

Time requirements are Mondays off site from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday on site from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

River Valley is a small (300 students), innovative charter school with college style scheduling, small class sizes (18 or fewer), few discipline problems, and high parent involvement. Students attend classes for 72 minute periods two full days each week and are given sizeable independent study assignments for the remainder of the week.

Qualifications:

Must be able to teach Chemistry and Marine Biology.

Must be willing to emphasize laboratory activities during instructional time.

Must be able to teach the NextGeneration Science Standards.

Must have experience planning courses for independent study.

Must be willing to teach using the curriculum that is in place at the school.

Must be willing to be mentored by coworkers familiar with indepednent study.

Must be willing to teach using the curriculum that is in place at the school.

Must be willing to take responsibility for student learning and work with students until understanding is achieved.

Must be able to provide students with a positive and nurturing learning environment.

Must be willing to work collaboratively with the chemistry teacher.

Must be able to establish a good working relationship with individual students and their parents.

Must be willing to set high academic standards and hold students accountable while supporting them in their learning.

Must be willing to value and maximize the use of independent study.

Must be willing to support and follow the educational plan of the charter.

Must be available beyond contract hours to fullfill role as ASB advisor.
