Description
Summary
The Deputy Chief of Police serves as the second-in-command of the Johnston Community College Police Department and assists the Chief of Police in the administration, leadership, and strategic direction of the department. The Deputy Chief is a sworn North Carolina law enforcement officer who must possess current North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification or be eligible for immediate lateral certification. This position exercises independent judgment in directing police operations, emergency preparedness, criminal investigations, community policing initiatives, accreditation efforts, personnel development, and departmental administration. The Deputy Chief assumes command of the department in the absence of the Chief of Police.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises sworn law enforcement officers, security officers, dispatch or administrative personnel, and other assigned staff. Responsible for hiring recommendations, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, coaching, discipline, and professional development in accordance with college policy.
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications
Education Minimum: Associates degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Emergency Management, or a related field.
Education Preferred: Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, or related field; Masters degree preferred.

The physical requirements described here are representative of those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, drive, climb stairs, respond to emergencies, restrain individuals when necessary, wear body armor and duty equipment, qualify with firearms, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Work Environment
Work is performed in office, classroom, and outdoor environments. Duties include patrol operations, emergency response, investigations, special events, and occasional exposure to hazardous situations, inclement weather, and stressful incidents. Position requires availability for evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-back.
