Summary:

The Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) Manager is responsible for oversight of site food safety, quality, and GFSI (BRC) programs for assigned locations. Key duties include ensuring adherence to product specifications and compliance with state and federal regulations governing seafood processing, food manufacturing, and thermal processing operations.

The position ensures that assigned sites meet all applicable state and federal regulatory requirements, including NOAA Seafood Inspection Program standards, while also providing subject matter expertise (SME) to support customer requirements, including information submissions and specification conformance.

This position requires significant travel and operational support aligned with seasonal production demands. The role follows a rotational schedule of approximately 3.5-4 months on-site in Alaska followed by a one-month break, supporting two primary production seasons (A and B) within a plant that operates approximately 10 months per year. During active production periods, the FSQA Manager is expected to provide onsite leadership to support peak operations and may also be required to assist other company facilities based on business needs, as directed by Plant Management and Corporate FSQA leadership.

Essential Functions: (Responsibilities, Tasks, Supervisory Needs)

  • Leads the implementation, verification, and continuous improvement of HACCP and Sanitation Programs, including ensuring effective training and competency of FSQA staff in CCP monitoring and GMP compliance
  • Oversees product monitoring, inspection, and evaluation programs to ensure product wholesomeness, integrity, and conformance to established specifications
  • Directs and develops FSQA supervisors, technicians, and key personnel, ensuring appropriate training and execution of processes impacting food safety, quality, and sanitation
  • Serves as the primary representative for all aspects of the site Quality Assurance Program during regulatory, customer (2nd party), and third-party (BRC/GFSI) audits
  • Ensures plant-wide training programs effectively communicate and reinforce sanitation and employee hygiene standards across all production personnel
  • Communicates and escalates any conditions that may adversely impact product safety, legality, or quality to Plant Management and Corporate FSQA leadership
  • Maintains oversight of applicable regulatory and certification programs, ensuring sustained compliance and readiness
  • Leads and/or oversees special technical and production-related projects across facilities as required by business needs
  • Oversees customer compliance activities, including management of customer-required documentation and web-based platforms (e.g., COAs, COCs), and ensures accurate, timely submission of technical information
  • Partners with cross-functional teams (Sales, Marketing, Customer Service) to address customer inquiries, concerns, and technical requirements
  • Ensures coordination, collection, and dissemination of food safety and quality information in support of customer needs
  • Maintains site-level responsibility for electronic information exchange systems where applicable
  • Oversees and ensures timely response to customer complaints in accordance with company procedures, including investigation, root cause determination, and corrective action implementation
  • Fosters a culture of professionalism and respect in all interactions with employees, customers, and external partners

Travel/On-Call Requirements: This position is based in Sand Point, Alaska and may be required to travel to other Alaska plants, up to 10%

Minimum Requirements

Required Qualifications: (Education, Years of Experience, Certifications)

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in Quality Assurance, preferably in food production or seafood industry
  • A minimum of 2 years' supervisory experience in the Quality Assurance field, preferably in food production or seafood industry
  • HS Diploma or equivalent

Preferred Education & Experiences:

  • Bachelor's degree in Food or Biological Sciences
  • HACCP certification
  • Working knowledge of Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) schemes including BRCGS, SQF, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Intermediate proficiency with MS office applications, specifically, Excel
  • Knowledge of HACCP regulations, Food Safety, and Audit procedures
  • Proven track leadership of strong leadership and influencing key business stakeholders

Work environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. This position may be expected to work outside of normal business hours.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is frequently required to climb or balance.

The employee is regularly required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, and talk or hear.

The employee moves objects regularly up to 10 pounds and frequently up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to distinguish shades of color to identify abnormalities and/or defects in food products.
