Lawrence Public Schools (LPS) educates close to 14,000 students in grades pre-kindergarten to 12, across 29 schools. As part of the Community, Family and Student Engagement team housed at the Family Resource Center, the Engagement Specialist will work with specific schools, across departmental teams, and with relevant school departments and local agencies to support the district's efforts to implement high-quality engagement practices and to support schools in increasing their own capacity to do so. Supervised by the department director, the Engagement Specialist will provide direct support to schools and to the FRC.

Position Summary:

The Family Engagement Specialist supports the Family Resource Center's mission of strengthening partnerships among schools, families, and the community to ensure students and families have equitable access to educational opportunities, support services, and meaningful engagement in school life. Serving as a district resource and thought partner in family engagement, this position advances districtwide family engagement efforts by building school and district capacity, coaching school-based staff, supporting family-facing initiatives, facilitating communication and problem-solving between schools and families, and connecting families to critical resources and services. The Family Engagement Specialist also provides direct support to families through outreach, translation, event coordination, referrals, and registration assistance, while working collaboratively across FRC teams, schools, Central Office departments, and community agencies to strengthen school-family-community partnerships.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Supervised by the department director, the Engagement Specialist will provide direct support to schools and to the FRC, with responsibilities to include:

  • Building capacity and fostering practices that grow high-quality engagement in schools, to include attending school-based events, coaching and providing relevant feedback and training.
  • Facilitating conversations with families and schools that help to resolve challenges, and using those experiences as opportunities for capacity building;
  • Supporting FRC-related initiatives that help the district shape, model and disseminate high-quality engagement.
  • Providing periodic frontline support for families visiting the FRC about resource information and referrals, triaging school-related issues, and registration assistance.
  • Working in collaboration with the District Residency/ Attendance and Homeless Newcomer Liaisons, Enrollment and the LWFI team.
  • Providing translation support for outreach, policy, or announcement-related documents.
  • Participating in FRC events and activities, including staff and team meetings, as well as workshops, professional development opportunities that include presentations on family, school, and community partnerships.
  • Proven ability to navigate difficult conversations to successful conclusions. Be the bridge between schools and families.
  • Serve as a translator as needed to facilitate clear communication. Coordinate all necessary outreach and arrangements to ensure the success of meetings.
  • Work with the team to support district-wide initiatives such as (Tu Voz, Virtual Coffee Hours, ESOL Parent Academy, and others).
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with schools and families to expand their capacity and mindset for creating partnerships. Build FE teams within the schools and support them throughout the school year.
  • Central Office departments, community agencies, and schools in an effort to ensure equal access to educational opportunities and support services for all students and their families.
  • Refer families as needed to community supports and resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven ability to navigate difficult conversations to successful conclusions.
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with schools and families to expand their capacity and mindset for creating partnerships.
  • Experienced team player who can display patience, act with grace under pressure, and is not intimidated by competing deadlines.
  • Experience collaborating with team members to plan, implement, evaluate, and revise plans to support related work.
  • Outstanding communicator, with proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, and with good humor

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred with at least three years of relevant experience in counseling or social work.
  • Position requires you to have a valid motor vehicle license as well as your own reliable means of transportation/ vehicle.
  • Proficient in English and Spanish, both in writing and orally.
  • Experience and comfort with Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive and Forms, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more.
  • Strong writing skills in both English and Spanish, and comfortable with translation requests
  • Working knowledge of Lawrence and/or Lawrence residency preferred.
  • Bilingual and culturally competent.
  • Lawrence resident highly preferred

Pay Range
