Job Description

Manger on Duty

Purpose: To ensure excellent, proactive customer service, smooth store operations, superb physical plant maintenance, safety and security for all during store hours

Status: Full-time. Reports to the Assistant Store Manager

Pay Level: V based on previous full years of experience union wage scale $22.75 - $24.25

Responsibilities:

Customer Service

  • Ensure excellent customer service
  • Greet customers and assist with product, navigation, and other questions
  • Assist departments as needed

o Provide support for front line staff throughout the store during business hours

o Cover breaks in departments when short staffed when possible

o Work with all staff and provide guidance and direction as required

o Provide tools and equipment to staff, BOD, Demo vendors, Classroom support

o Help staff with complex customer interactions

  • Direct and coordinate the work of Parking Lot Attendants and Housekeepers

o Assist with questions, dilemmas and problem solving as issues arise

  • Facilitate customer, staff and vendor transactions

o Assist customers with bike tools, loaner locks, auto problems

o Direct, coordinate and communicate service vendor activity

Operations and Maintenance

  • Ensure store is opened and closed following security procedures and department protocol
  • Ensure smooth operation of store during business hours
  • Keep the grounds and parking lot clean, safe, efficient by:

o Removing litter

o Removing snow, ice and slush from sidewalks, bus stop and curbs

o Assist Parking Lot Attendants with complex interactions and intervene as needed

  • Monitor Help Desk tickets to effectively manage repair and service requests by departments
  • Schedule repair and maintenance work coordinating with department needs
  • Work with service vendors to maintain inventory of store supplies, such as:

o Rugs, linen, paper products, waste bags

o Work with service vendors to maintain store and equipment in excellent condition

o Troubleshoot equipment breakdowns and call vendors for repair and maintenance

o Assist vendors identify and resolve equipment and building problems

o Communicate necessary maintenance work scheduled to all impacted staff

o Ensure service vendors check in to perform service and check out with MOD re: work performed

  • Manage waste stream for effective and conscientious removal of recyclables and trash
  • Monitor waste corral for excess debris, unsafe conditions, efficient use of space and effective waste removal schedules and maintain our waste log
  • Train all staff in accurate waste stream management, including proper;

o Composting

o Comingle and paper recycling

o Cardboard compacting

  • Ensure clean, orderly store during shifts
  • Assign staff lockers, mailboxes as requested and ensure areas are cleaned out as staff moves on
  • Help staff maintain a clean, safe environment by routine cleaning of employee refrigerator, freezer and other public space, such as the breakroom, coat room, quiet room and meeting rooms
  • Coordinate work of housekeeping staff

o Ensure spills and other hazardous conditions are resolved

o Ensure routine and weekly scheduled tasks are completed

  • Check food storage cooler temps at least three times daily to ensure proper function
  • Ensure coolers are equipped with visible thermometers
  • Produce and test in-house Anolyte and Catholyte cleaning solution

o Ensure sanitizer is potent and effective in food prep areas

o Alert food prep staff if sanitizer equipment fails to produce effective product

o Maintain logs for these tasks

  • Training duties may include:

o Developing materials and practices for training Operations/all staff

o Policy, procedure and waste stream management orientation training for all new hires

o Store Security Training for all staff

Safety and Security

  • Develop, renew and present Store Security Training required for all new hires
  • Review and develop emergency response plans for all foreseeable threats, including:

o Fire and evacuation

o Severe weather threat

o Power outage

o Emergency Store Closure

  • Manage the Floor Warden Program

o Update and refresh orientation to Floor Wardens semi annually

o Continue training new Floor Wardens as they assume new positions

  • Ensure safety of staff and customers

o Assist staff travel to parked cars as requested

o Alert staff to current neighborhood security threats

o Provide basic orientation to safe navigation of urban streets

  • Maintain store security during shifts, including intervening and/or resolving conflicts with customers
  • Coordinate with Customer Service Staff security alerts to effectively intervene/communicate with parties of interest
  • Coach CS Staff, FE Staff and all store staff to assist MODs with security protocols
  • Review security camera footage to assist resolving questions following camera policy
  • Ensure security alarm system is operational and respond to Armor Dispatch as needed

o Respond to overnight alarms, as requested

  • Provide feedback to department managers regarding safety and staff issues
  • Maintain and facilitate Store Safety Committee per MN/OSHA regulation
  • Attend all Manager on Duty meetings
  • Other responsibilities as directed by Assistant Store Manager

Qualifications:

Essential

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Proven effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Supervisory experience, including hiring, training and evaluations
  • Willingness to work with others in a team atmosphere
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and diffuse tense situations
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Regular, predictable attendance
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • English proficiency

Functional

  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, reach, squat and walk for extended periods of time per shift
  • Bend and lift loads, not to exceed 50 pounds. Push and pull carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.
  • Environmental exposure to extreme temperatures (coolers, ovens, freezer, outdoors, etc.)
  • Ability to freely access all areas of the store including offices, sales floor, back stock areas, and walk-in coolers and freezers.
  • Ability to move or handle merchandise throughout the store generally weighing up to 50 pounds.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with co-operative business model and natural foods products
  • Multilingual is a plus
  • Familiarity with building, equipment and plumbing
  • Demonstrated history of superb good judgment
  • Adaptability, discernment and creative problem solving ability
  • Ability to resolve conflict and diffuse tension
  • Comfortable in training and leadership role
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds
