Department Summary

The Center for Human Identification (CHI) at UNT Health is an accredited forensic lab designated as a criminal justice agency by the state of Texas. Globally recognized for its expertise, CHI offers forensic DNA testing, forensic genetic genealogy (FGG), CODIS operations, anthropological analysis, investigative support, cutting-edge research initiatives, and forensic training and education.  CHI was the first public lab in the nation accredited to perform forensic genetic genealogy (FGG) and manages the Texas Missing Persons DNA Database.

Position Overview

Conduct forensic DNA analysis on evidence submitted to CHI to establish the identity and/or source of biological materials and provide legal testimony as the to the methods and results obtained in forensic casework.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or any discipline related to forensic science; and completed coursework in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and statistics from an accredited university or program approved by the Texas Forensic Science Commission.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Familiarity with DNA extraction, quantification, amplification, and capillary electrophoresis methods to analyze biological evidence.
• Proficient in examining forensic evidence, ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to quality assurance policies and procedures.
• Understanding of quality assurance policies and protocols to ensure the accuracy and reliability of forensic test results.
• Skilled in analyzing and interpreting DNA results, performing statistical calculations, and generating comprehensive forensic reports.
• Experience in conducting serological screening on evidence to identify biological materials such as blood and saliva.
• Ability to handle evidence meticulously, ensuring that all tests are performed accurately and documentation is thorough.
• Ongoing dedication to staying updated on forensic science advancements and maintaining proficiency through continuing education.
• Ability to work effectively with colleagues in the lab and legal professionals, ensuring smooth casework management and successful outcomes.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Texas Forensic Science Commission license.

Job Duties

• Casework examination following all Quality Assurance Manual and Protocol/ Procedure Manual guidelines.
• Data analysis, interpretation of results, and report generation related to serological and DNA results.
• Provide expert witness testimony as required.
• Participation in various validation and laboratory projects as needed.
• Maintain proficiency by completing two external proficiency tests per year, as required by the National Standards.
• Complete required hours of continuing education and review current scientific literature.
• Complete technical and administrative review of cases.

• Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
• Communicating with others to exchange information.

Environmental Hazards

• Work with toxic or caustic chemicals.
• Exposure to moving mechanical parts or vibration.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm with potential for flexible work arrangement.
