FLEET TECHNICIAN III - Fleet Services

JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, perform light mechanical repairs, Tire changes, and Preventative Maintenance service on city vehicles/equipment. Perform other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Perform routine maintenance and light repairs on City vehicles and equipment, including (but no limited to) diagnosing and addressing basic electrical issues; replacing bulbs and light assemblies; servicing engine drive belts; and removing and installing batteries, mower blades, and (for automotive units) alternators and starter assemblies. Assist Fleet Technicians with repairs to City equipment, including work on motors, transmissions, and rear axles. Communicate clearly and professionally in English, both verbally and in writing, when interacting with City employees, officials, vendors, and the public. Accurately track and document labor, materials, and work performed on service orders. Safely operate a wide range of City vehicles and equipment.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Perform special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. required. Texas Class A Commercial operator's license (CDL) preferred, not required. Texas Class C Driver's license acceptable if applicant has also passed written portion of test. Must obtain Texas Class A Commercial Operator's License (CDL) prior to promoting to Fleet Technician II position. Must obtain Texas Department of Public Safety State Inspection Certification at the request of Fleet Manager, but not later than six months from assignment to position. Two A.S.E certifications preferred, not required. In lieu of certifications, preference will be given to candidates who have completed an automotive trade school program or have equivalent professional automotive experience in a commercial or shop environment. Certifications must be kept current and renewed in a timely manner.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:

Must have two years' experience as a Preventive Maintenance Technician with the City of Richardson, or two years of verifiable technician experience required in another fleet or retail automotive environment. Knowledge of primary welding skills in automotive or construction fields is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Crawl under and/or climb on vehicles for inspections. Lift, pull, and/or push up to 100 pounds of parts inventory. Sit, stand, stoop, twist and/or walk for extended periods of time during vehicle inspections. Work both indoors and outdoors, including during adverse weather conditions such as extreme cold, heat and temperature swings. Use appropriate safety precautions in performance of job duties.
