Performs progressively responsible mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of diesel- and gasoline-powered on- and off-highway vehicles and equipment. The career ladder ranges from semi-skilled work with assistance or independent assignments at Level I, to skilled diagnosis, repair and overhaul at Level II, and journeyman-level work with occasional oversight of others at Level III.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Fleet Technician III - Pay Grade 15

• Performs skilled journeyman-level mechanical work across the entire maintenance spectrum, including diagnosis, repair and overhaul of rubber-tired and tracked vehicles, including equipment with hydraulically powered work mechanisms.

• Troubleshoots, disassembles, repairs and reassembles components of all sizes and types; performs preventive maintenance and may change tires.

• Uses hand tools, air-driven power tools and related shop equipment; efficiently operates various types of welding equipment and oxygen/acetylene torch for heating and cutting metal.

• Performs shop and field repairs and emergency road service during and beyond routine business hours when required.

• Completes required records, maintains a clean work area, may occasionally oversee the work of others and may be required to demonstrate proficiency with modern diagnostic equipment.

• Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Fleet Technician III

• Advanced working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, standard practices and safe work practices of the automotive and heavy equipment trade.

• Knowledge of electrical systems and schematic interpretation, automotive and heavy hydraulics, internal combustion engines, and rotary and tracked drive trains.

• Journeyman-level ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair the vehicles and equipment referenced in this description.

• Ability to read technical materials and computer reports; communicate verbally and in writing; follow instructions; perform mathematical tasks; investigate problems; verify findings; recommend solutions; and occasionally oversee the work of others.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements - All Levels

• Ability to perform physically difficult tasks and work overhead with arms and hands raised for extended periods.

• Ability to operate hand tools and torque wrenches requiring more than 100 pounds of lateral pressure.

• Ability to work in confined spaces, including pit areas, engine compartments and beneath vehicles, requiring significant bending and stooping.

• Ability to work on flat and variable floor surfaces and around diesel fuel, gasoline, motor oil, hydraulic fluid, cleaning solvents, antifreeze and other substances common to the automotive repair trade.

• Ability to see; ambulate independently; drive and operate automotive and heavy equipment unassisted; bend, stoop, sit, crouch, crawl, climb and stand; lift and hold parts and components exceeding 65 pounds; and perform tasks in all weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate of an accredited high school/trade school or possession of an equivalent diploma.

• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida's Driver's License.

III - Pay Grade 15

• Minimum of five (5) years of experience repairing equipment of the types described above, including three (3) years as a Journeyman Mechanic.

• A comparable combination of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

SPECIAL PREFERENCE

• Preference may be given to applicants who are ASE certified or possess related certifications.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• This full-time position is based in Polk County, Florida. Flexibility may be required to support emergencies outside of regular business hours.

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the county and its residents.
