Job Summary
Supervise employees in the Fleet shop related to the scheduling and assignment of operational repair and maintenance of the City's fleet of vehicles and equipment. Oversee customer service, parts inventory, and preventative maintenance programs.
Job Responsibilities
Supervise, coordinate, and oversee the activities of the Fleet shop and related service writing activities. Ensure repair times are meeting operational needs of the departments and that proper resources are available to complete repair and maintenance activities.
Supervise and instruct permanent and temporary employees, including making recommendations relative to discharge, layoffs or suspensions, disciplinary actions, and the adjustment of grievances; participate in the performance evaluations of employees assigned.
Inspect light and heavy mobile equipment to ensure the necessary maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment is being completed in accordance with Fleet standards.
Assist in the management of the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS) to ensure the Fleet shop is properly utilizing the system and that management is receiving quality decision-making reports on key performance indicators.
Coordinate effective communication and collaboration between City customers and Fleet employees. Maintain and administer effective customer service between the Fleet shop and its customers.
Oversee parts inventory and supplies and purchasing of repair parts.
Coordinate the Fleet Division's preventative maintenance program, including scheduling inspections and maintenance of mobile equipment and flow of equipment to the Fleet shop.
Assist the Fleet Manager in identifying equipment needs, developing replacement cycles, and budgeting for the purchase of vehicles, equipment, supplies, and materials. Compile the specifications for those purchases; inspect bid items and recommend acceptance or rejection.
Perform miscellaneous administrative duties, including overseeing the dispensing and purchasing of fuel and lubricants; prepare schedules for emergency periods such as snow removal; present safety training, etc. Maintain inventory of all hazardous chemicals in stock.
Perform other such duties and functions as may be necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school, or GED, and mechanical trade school and a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a journeyman mechanic, some of which was at a supervisory level; or any such combination of education, experience, and/or training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver's license.
Supplemental Information

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety requirements and procedures related to the work performed by the division.
Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to tactfully resolve disputes and complaints.
Ability to diagnose defective light- and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
Knowledge and ability in the use of tools, equipment, and machines used in maintaining and repairing automotive and heavy equipment.
Ability to supervise, plan, assign, organize, and review the work of skilled, semiskilled, and unskilled employees within a multitask division.
Ability to establish work priorities and plan and schedule projects.
Knowledge of computers and various Microsoft and fleet-related software programs.
Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to work under varying weather conditions and varying and extended working hours when required.
