FLEET APPRENTICE MECHANIC

PAY RANGE: $18.04 - $25.26 depending on experience and qualifications, with starting wage not typically above the mid-point of the range ($21.65)

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for apprentice-level maintenance and repair work to vehicles and equipment. Work involves responsibility for safe and effective maintenance and routine repair of vehicles, light trucks, roads and grounds equipment and police vehicles. Duties include repairing brakes, exhausts and related components, tuning engines, changing and repairing tires, changing oil, lubricating and related preventive maintenance. This position also has the responsibility for making standard vehicle and equipment maintenance decisions in accordance with established procedures. This work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in vehicle and equipment maintenance and routine repair.
Works under the general supervision of the Fleet Shop Lead as a team lead and the Fleet Manager as the Supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
All job functions outlined below will be performed alongside Fleet Mechanic 3 or Fleet Shop Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. Graduation from high school.
AND
B. Currently enrolled in a Vocational/Technical School that is eligible to participate in a Co-op program. Proof of enrollment will be required.
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods of vehicle and equipment overhaul and repair.
Skill in the use of mechanic's tools.
Ability to perform vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair safely, effectively and efficiently.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn City procedures. Good ability to communicate orally.
Good ability to complete forms and charts
Must be able to move objects weighing up to 80 Ibs. Must possess valid driver's license
Ability to stand for a minimum of 1 up to 10 hours, walk for a minimum of 1 up to 10 hours and drive for a minimum of 1 up to 10 hours per workday. Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, lift and push/pull for up to 68% of the workday. Ability to climb, crawl and reach above shoulder level for up to 35% of the workday. Ability to use both feet for operating foot controls of equipment. Ability to use both hands for simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulation of tools, equipment and objects. Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions around moving machinery. Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions where environmental conditions may be challenging. Ability to drive an automobile.
