JOB DESCRIPTION, SEPTEMBER 2026 FLAG INSTRUCTOR
REPORTS TO : Principal and Band Director GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, provides instruction, leadership, motivation, and support to students participating
in
the
flag
program.
Develops
students'
skills
in
flag
technique,
movement,
choreography,
performance,
and
teamwork
while
promoting
physical
well-being,
discipline,
confidence,
positive
character,
and
social
and
emotional
development.
Assists
the
Band
Director
with
the
coordination
and
implementation
of
color
guard
activities,
performances,
rehearsals,
and
competitions.
Reports
to
the
Principal
and
Band
Director.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides
instruction
and
training
in
flag
and
color
guard
techniques,
including
equipment
handling,
marching,
movement,
dance,
body
positioning,
and
performance
skills.
Assists
in
developing
and
maintaining
a
successful,
engaging,
and
dynamic
flag
program
that
promotes
student
participation,
teamwork,
discipline,
and
school
pride.
Develops,
teaches,
and
rehearses
flag
routines
and
choreography
for
halftime
shows,
football
games,
parades,
competitions,
festivals,
school
events,
and
other
public
performances.
Collaborates
with
the
Band
Director
to
coordinate
routines
and
performances
with
the
overall
musical
and
visual
design
of
the
marching
band
program.
Plans
and
implements
rehearsals
that
develop
students'
technical
skills,
physical
conditioning,
coordination,
musicality,
performance
quality,
and
confidence.
Assists
with
the
selection,
preparation,
care,
and
appropriate
use
of
flags,
equipment,
uniforms,
props,
and
other
color
guard
materials.
Assists
with
before-
and
after-school
rehearsals,
summer
practices,
camps,
clinics,
performances,
competitions,
and
other
program-related
activities.
Supervises
students
at
all
times
from
the
time
practice
or
activity
begins
until
all
students
leave
campus.
Monitors
the
physical
condition
of
students
constantly
during
physical
activity;
enforces
safety
rules
and
regulations.
Encourages
academic
excellence
of
students.
Maintains
positive
relationships
with
parents;
schedules
and
conducts
conferences
with
parents
and
student
athletes
as
necessary.
Performs
related
duties
as
required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's
degree
in
designated
subject
area
with
a
valid
South
Carolina
Teaching
Certificate
preferred,
supplemented
by
four
to
five
years
of
experience
in
flag
performance,
marching
arts,
dance,
choreography,
or
a
related
performance
activity,
preferably
at
the
high
school
and/or
college
level,
or
an
equivalent
combination
of
education,
training,
and
experience
that
provides
the
required
knowledge,
skills,
and
abilities.
Experience
instructing,
coaching,
or
mentoring
school-age
students
preferred.
Must
possess
and
maintain
high
moral
character
and
ability
to
work
well
with
children.
Must
be
willing
to
work
flexible
hours.
Valid
driver's

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort,
