IDR is seeking a Firmware Engineer III  to join one of our top clients for an opportunity in Durham, NC. In this role, you will design, develop, and optimize embedded firmware for advanced motor control and motion systems within a highly regulated, high-reliability environment. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams to support integration, testing, and continuous performance improvements across embedded control applications.

Position Overview for the Firmware Engineer III :

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for advanced products and systems with a focus on motor control and embedded control applications.
  • Develop and enhance control algorithms to support higher motion rates, acceleration, bandwidth, and overall system performance.
  • Implement and validate resolver-to-digital conversion (RDC) functionality, including signal conditioning, demodulation, calibration, and angle tracking.
  • Debug and troubleshoot firmware using lab equipment and embedded development tools, performing root cause analysis to resolve complex issues.
  • Support the full development lifecycle through collaboration, documentation, design/code reviews, and integration, verification, validation, and testing activities.

Requirements for the Firmware Engineer III :

  • 5+ years of embedded firmware development experience in real-time embedded systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems development.
  • Strong experience developing firmware for motor control circuits or motor control systems, including control loop optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with microcontrollers/embedded processors and embedded debugging tools (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics with strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.

Compensation Details: $63-75/hr
