Description
The City of South Lake Tahoe is seeking a detail-oriented, customer-focused Fire Safety Inspector I to help protect the community through proactive fire and life-safety inspections. This entry-level technical position conducts inspections of hotels, motels, commercial and industrial buildings, public facilities, special event venues, and construction projects to support compliance with applicable fire, building, and life-safety codes. Under general supervision, the incumbent will learn City policies and inspection procedures while working collaboratively with property owners, contractors, architects, businesses, and the public.
Experience with inspections or in related fields, such as code enforcement, fire prevention, building inspection, construction, or the skilled trades, is desirable. Knowledge of building construction methods, materials, tools, and safety practices is also desirable, as are relevant inspection coursework, certifications, or training. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication, customer service, problem-solving, and recordkeeping skills, along with the ability to read and interpret construction plans and apply adopted codes and regulations.

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
One year of experience in the journey level trades or as a contractor in a variety of building construction activities.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California or Nevada drivers license required.
Successful completion of CA Fire Service Training and Education courses: Fire Prevention 1A and 1B must be completed/passed prior to completion of one year probationary period.
Must successfully complete/pass CA Fire Service Training and Education courses Fire Prevention 1C and 1D within two years from date of hire to retain employment.
Possession of an ICBO or ICC Building Inspector certification highly desirable.
