Financial Controller Opportunity | Houston Oil & Gas Trading Company

UNITY Search is seeking a dynamic and experienced accountant for a Financial Controller role on behalf of a client located in the Galleria. This position supports an emerging oil and gas trading company with 11 years of operating history and is responsible for overseeing core accounting and financial control functions. The Financial Controller will report directly to the CFO and play a key role in maintaining financial accuracy, compliance, and operational discipline across the business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting and financial control activities.
  • Manage the general ledger, account reconciliations, and month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Monitor compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and applicable regulatory obligations.
  • Coordinate external audits and work with auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners.
  • Analyze financial performance and provide reporting and recommendations to the CFO.
  • Partner with leadership and operational teams to improve financial processes and reporting.
  • Help ensure accurate accounting for trading activity, settlements, and related financial transactions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a Controller role or long-term progressive Assistant Controller/Accounting Manager role.
  • Experience in oil and gas, energy trading, commodities, or a closely related industry is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, internal controls, and accounting principles.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and cash management.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems, ERP platforms, and Microsoft Excel.
  • CPA or CMA designation is a plus.

Reporting Structure
This role reports directly to the CFO and will be entrusted with full financial controller responsibilities, supporting both day-to-day operations and strategic financial oversight.
