Description

Controller – Construction & Fabrication

We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and finance function for a growing construction and fabrication organization. This position will oversee financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, project accounting, internal controls, and compliance while partnering closely with executive leadership and operational teams.

The Controller will play a key role in providing accurate financial information, improving profitability, supporting business growth, and developing best-in-class accounting practices across the organization. This position will report directly to the CEO and lead the accounting and finance team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting and financial reporting functions, ensuring accurate and timely financial information.
  • Lead the development and reporting of annual operating, capital, and program budgets.
  • Manage project accounting functions, including job costing, WIP schedules, revenue recognition, and financial reporting for construction and fabrication operations.
  • Analyze financial projections versus actual results and provide recommendations to improve profitability and operational performance.
  • Oversee billing, collections, accounts receivable, and cash management to maintain healthy cash flow.
  • Manage equipment cost allocations, utilization reporting, and the organization's fixed asset program.
  • Develop and monitor KPIs, financial dashboards, and performance metrics to support executive and operational decision-making.
  • Ensure effective internal controls and compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Lead relationships with independent auditors, tax professionals, banking partners, and other external financial stakeholders.
  • Partner with executive leadership to evaluate capital expenditures, acquisitions, and strategic growth opportunities.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance personnel.
  • Establish and communicate financial best practices across departments and business divisions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, efficiency, and overall financial performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of accounting or finance experience.
  • 3+ years of management or leadership experience.
  • Active CPA license required.
  • Construction industry experience strongly preferred, particularly within heavy civil, infrastructure, roadway, bridge, utility, earthwork, or structural steel/fabrication environments.
  • Strong understanding of construction and fabrication accounting, including job costing, WIP, revenue recognition, and project financial reporting.
  • Experience with equipment accounting, fleet cost management, and fixed assets preferred.
  • Experience with Viewpoint Vista or similar construction accounting software preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and financial modeling skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with executives, project managers, operations teams, and external stakeholders.
