Job Overview

As Controller, you will oversee the daily accounting operations, including the accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll departments. The Controller will also help guide the business's strategic financial decisions, ensuring financial health for the business.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage accurate reporting of all financial statements
  • Manage, and when necessary, prepare a weekly financial forecast
  • Review and approve invoices to be paid, as well as review accounts receivable aging reports to ensure action is being taken on past-due balances
  • Oversee and, when necessary, execute the posting of transactions to the general ledger, including journal entries, invoices, etc.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packages for management, including monthly financial statements
  • Perform detailed monthly reviews of financial statements versus budget and prior periods to understand and explain variances and discrepancies
  • Work with the President and Management team to prepare the annual budget and quarterly reforecasting
  • Assist Field Operations with monthly Work in Progress (WIP) and provide job cost reconciliations; compile and update information for President and Management team review
  • Verify that subcontractor invoices are billed and that associated customer billings are processed at a reasonable profit margin
  • Oversee implementation of new software products for both financial reporting and operations
  • Work closely with the President and Management team to identify potential improvements necessary to properly adopt new systems
  • Support project coordinators in managing percent completion on contract payments, remaining funding available per job, and any funding requirements
  • Lead the external annual financial audit process, ensuring support documentation is provided accurately and in a timely fashion
  • Assist in processing year-end 401(k) census, W-2s, and 1099 forms
  • Ensure compliance with various jurisdictions' tax laws and reporting requirements, including but not limited to:
    • Quarterly CAT tax and monthly sales tax filings
    • Sales tax audits
    • Quarterly IFTA tax preparation/filing and annual Form 2290 filing
    • Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Contractor Qualification and City of Columbus Contractor Prequalification
  • Manage Accounts Payable and Receivable Administrative Assistants
  • Complete ad hoc projects and assignments as needed

Requirements

General

  • Proven experience as a Controller or other similar position within a construction environment; with accounting experience 
  • Ability to be willing to work, support, manage, and initiate change within the organization
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency and ability to meet deadlines
  • High degree of organization, accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
  • High degree of problem-solving ability

Technical

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulations
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes, including budgeting, financial closure, reporting, etc.
  • Proven experience as a Controller or other similar position with experience in the construction industry preferred
  • Experience in completing and overseeing the full-cycle general ledger close process
  • Proven ability to understand the financial health of the company based on current financial reports and guide operational changes where needed
  • Preferred experience in QuickBooks and Foundation or prior experience in similar platforms
  • Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or relevant field is preferred
  • Professional certification (i.e., CPA) is a plus
