University of Minnesota Emergency Medical Services (UMEMS) is primarily an event-based operation. It may also be mobilized on short notice for emergency assistance to the greater University community. University events occur year-round, even during class sessions or official university breaks. While uncommon, urgent staffing changes, or community emergencies may require employees to respond to work on short notice when available.
Supervision Received: Field Training Officer (FTO) staff are supervised by the UMEMS Team Manager
Supervision Exercised: FTOs are peer leaders and considered supervisors to the volunteer EMTs. This may include direct supervision, as well as training, guidance, and assistance.
Work Schedule: The FTO schedule is normally flexible and includes both on-site and remote work.
Primary Responsibilities
Driving specialized University vehicles including ambulances, marked squads and UTVs
Providing direct patient care at events/incidents staffed by UMEMS
Supervising volunteer EMTs at events/incidents staffed by UMEMS
Completing any necessary reports
Assisting with internal and external training and education provided through UMEMS
Assist UMEMS as needed as a Metro EMS Region agency in the event of a major incident
Assist Department of Emergency Management as needed in the event of a major incident
Assist with administrative and logistic support of UMEMS
Maintain training and education required:
To maintain EMT certification
By the University for all applicable employees. This may include:
Blood and body fluid protection training
Mitigating Sexual harassment in the workplace
Data privacy
Comply with UMEMS, DEM and University of Minnesota Policies and Procedures
Comply with applicable MN OEMS regulations and statutes
Other Duties as assigned.
Probationary Period
All FTOs serve in a probationary role for the first four (4) months or 120 days of work. The UMEMS Team Manager may release a probationary FTO at will during the probationary period.
This position is represented by Unit 7 of AFSCME Council 5, Local 3800. Salary, benefits, discipline, and other matters are determined by the current contract in effect.
