Job Title: Field Technician (Travel)

Job Description

The field technician joins a dedicated field services team responsible for operating and maintaining landfill gas wellfields within the Midwest. In this role, you monitor, tune, and maintain gas collection systems, perform environmental field testing, and support safe, compliant landfill operations. You receive comprehensive on-the-job training and development in environmental services, gaining hands-on experience with gas analyzers, surface emissions monitoring, and mechanical maintenance in an outdoor, field-based setting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily operations and maintenance of landfill gas wellfields in coordination with the field services team.
  • Monitor and tune landfill gas wells using gas analyzers and related instrumentation to optimize system performance.
  • Conduct surface emissions monitoring to help ensure regulatory compliance and safe operation of landfill gas systems.
  • Perform pump pulling, inspection, and mechanical maintenance on landfill gas collection equipment and related components.
  • Collect environmental field samples and perform environmental testing as directed, following established procedures and safety standards.
  • Use field data collection tools and reading software to accurately record, interpret, and report system performance and environmental data.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues in the field, using a strong mechanical mindset to identify and resolve problems.
  • Follow hazardous materials handling procedures and apply HAZWOPER training and safety practices while working on active landfills.
  • Travel regularly to multiple landfill sites across several states to support field operations and maintenance activities.
  • Work effectively outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat and cold, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality.
  • Collaborate with team members to continuously improve field practices, system performance, and environmental outcomes.
  • Adhere to all company, site, and regulatory safety policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe work practices.

Essential Skills

  • Experience working in outdoor or field-based industries, such as construction, utilities, environmental services, or similar.
  • Strong mechanical mindset with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues in the field.
  • Comfort with frequent travel, including traveling 60-80% of the time across several states to support various landfill sites.
  • Mechanical aptitude for working with pumps, piping, valves, and gas collection equipment.
  • Ability to perform environmental field work, including field sampling and environmental testing.
  • Familiarity with or ability to learn data collection tools and reading software for recording and interpreting field data.
  • Comfort working around hazardous materials and in active landfill environments while following strict safety procedures.
  • Capability to work outdoors in all seasons, including heat and cold, for extended periods.
  • Valid driver qualifications and the ability to demonstrate safe, reliable driving to operate a company truck.
  • Willingness to complete and apply HAZWOPER training and other required safety certifications.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Background in environmental field work, landfill operations, or related environmental services is beneficial.
  • Experience with landfill gas systems, landfill gas monitoring, or environmental testing equipment is an advantage.
  • Exposure to fusion work or similar field construction techniques is helpful.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection, reporting, and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining clear communication with the broader team.
  • Interest in building a long-term career in the environmental industry with opportunities for growth and development.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and involves working at large landfill sites and multiple remote locations. You begin with approximately one month of training at a home landfill, working standard 40-hour weeks while learning field procedures, equipment operation, and safety practices. During this period, you commute to the training landfill and receive full personal protective equipment. After successfully completing training, you travel regularly to sites across states such as Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, spending 60-80% of your time on the road. Once you demonstrate safe and reliable driving, you receive a company truck for travel between sites. The work takes place outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat and cold, and involves physical tasks on active landfill sites. The company provides PPE and purchases a second pair of work boots to support safe, comfortable field work. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
