Overview:

DoW SkillBridge – NETA Field Service Technician Trainee

Shermco Industries is seeking transitioning Active Duty service members for our DoW SkillBridge NETA Field Service Technician Training Program.

 

This opportunity is designed for service members with backgrounds in electrical systems, power generation and distribution, electronics, controls, instrumentation, maintenance, or other related technical fields who are interested in transitioning their military experience into a civilian career in electrical testing and power systems.

 

As a SkillBridge participant, you will train alongside experienced Shermco Field Service Technicians at industrial and commercial customer sites. Participants will gain hands-on exposure to the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and commissioning of low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical systems ranging from 480V to 600kV.

 

This program is designed to build upon the technical skills, troubleshooting ability, safety mindset, discipline, and field experience developed during military service while providing industry-specific training for a career in electrical testing.

 

Prior NETA certification or electrical testing experience is not required.

 

SkillBridge Program Support:

For selected participants, Shermco will provide one-way transportation to the approved training/work location and lodging during the SkillBridge training period. The goal of the program is to transition successful participants into full-time Field Service Technician opportunities with Shermco upon completion of SkillBridge. Employment following SkillBridge is not guaranteed and is based on successful program completion, performance, qualifications, and business needs.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

SkillBridge participants will train under the guidance of experienced Shermco technicians and may receive hands-on training and exposure in the following areas:

  • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and maintain low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Learn safe work practices for electrical testing and field-service operations.
  • Perform instrument transformer testing.
  • Assist with power transformer testing, including Doble, TTR, insulation resistance, and related testing methods.
  • Learn testing procedures for electromechanical and solid-state protective relays.
  • Assist with protective relay testing, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Perform cable testing using methods such as Tan Delta, Power Factor, VLF, and DC Hipot.
  • Assist with low-, medium-, and high-voltage switchgear and circuit breaker testing.
  • Learn automatic transfer switch testing and troubleshooting.
  • Gain exposure to electrical system startup and commissioning activities.
  • Learn proper setup and operation of electrical test equipment.
  • Collect, document, and interpret electrical testing data.
  • Develop technical documentation and field-service reports.
  • Gain exposure to PowerDB and other electrical testing software.
  • Work alongside experienced technicians at industrial, commercial, utility, and other customer locations.
  • Participate in applicable safety and technical training, which may include NFPA 70E, OSHA, CPR/First Aid/AED, and other industry-specific training.
  • Travel locally and regionally to customer sites as required by the training program.
Qualifications:

SkillBridge Eligibility

  • Must currently be serving on Active Duty in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Must be eligible to participate in the DoD SkillBridge Program.
  • Must be able to obtain command approval prior to beginning the program.
  • Must have sufficient time remaining on Active Duty to complete the approved SkillBridge training period.

Military Experience We're Looking For

Ideal candidates will have military training or hands-on experience involving:

  • Electrical power generation and distribution
  • AC/DC electrical systems
  • Generators and power-generation equipment
  • Electrical distribution equipment
  • Switchgear and circuit breakers
  • Transformers
  • Motors and motor controls
  • Electrical testing and test equipment
  • Protective relays and control systems
  • Instrumentation and controls
  • Electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics
  • Preventive and corrective electrical maintenance
  • Reading electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals
  • Lockout/Tagout and electrical safety procedures

Relevant military occupations may include, but are not limited to:

Army: Prime Power, Interior Electrician, Power Generation Equipment Repair, Utilities and related electrical/electronics specialties.

Navy: Electrician's Mate (EM), Construction Electrician (CE/Seabee), Gas Turbine Systems Technician – Electrical (GSE), Interior Communications Electrician (IC), Electronics Technician (ET), nuclear-trained electrical/electronics personnel, and related ratings.

Air Force: Electrical Power Production, Electrical Systems, Electrical & Environmental Systems, power generation, avionics/electrical maintenance, and related specialties.

Marine Corps: Electrician, Generator/Power Generation, Utilities, Ground Electronics, electrical maintenance, and related MOSs.

Coast Guard: Electrician's Mate (EM), Electronics Technician (ET), and other ratings involving electrical distribution, power generation, controls, or troubleshooting.

Space Force: Electrical power, facilities, electronics, controls, communications infrastructure, and other relevant technical specialties.

Don't see your MOS, AFSC, or rating listed? We still encourage you to apply. If your military experience includes hands-on work with electrical systems, power generation, electrical distribution, controls, electronics, testing, troubleshooting, or maintenance, your experience may translate well into this program.

Additional Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to safety and following established procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to learn electrical testing and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Basic computer skills, including email, data entry, Microsoft Excel, and other standard business applications.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be willing and able to travel locally and regionally; travel requirements may vary based on training location and customer assignments.
  • Must be comfortable working in industrial, commercial, utility, and field environments.
  • Must be able to climb, crawl, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 75 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be willing to work flexible schedules based on customer and training requirements, which may include occasional nights, weekends, or extended hours.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must be able to meet applicable Shermco safety, background, driving, and drug and alcohol screening requirements.

No prior NETA certification is required. Shermco is looking for service members with the technical foundation and aptitude to develop into successful electrical testing professionals.
