    Description

    RND Automation is seeking a highly skilled and customer-focused Field Service Technician to install, commission, troubleshoot, and service custom automation equipment at customer facilities throughout the United States and internationally.

     

    This position requires approximately 75% travel and is ideal for a senior technician who enjoys hands-on problem solving, working with advanced automation technologies, and supporting customers in demanding manufacturing environments.

     

    Key Responsibilities

    • Install, commission, troubleshoot, and service custom robotic, packaging, and automated assembly equipment at customer facilities.
    • Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, controls, and automation-related issues.
    • Troubleshoot and modify PLCs, HMIs, motion-control systems, and robotic systems.
    • Support equipment startup, machine qualification, and customer acceptance.
    • Analyze machine performance and identify root causes of equipment failures.
    • Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams, and machine documentation.
    • Troubleshoot mechanical systems including conveyors, actuators, servo systems, tooling, fixtures, and custom assembly mechanisms.
    • Work closely with engineering, controls, manufacturing, and project management teams to resolve field issues.
    • Provide technical support and training to customers, including engineering personnel.
    • Document service activities, machine issues, corrective actions, and recommendations.
    • Communicate professionally with customers and provide timely updates on equipment status and corrective actions.
    • Assist with machine improvements, modifications, and field upgrades.
    • Maintain a high level of safety and professionalism while working at customer facilities.

     

    Required Qualifications

    • Requires equivalent hands-on experience as a Field Service Technician or similar role; a certificate or technical degree is preferred.
    • Experience troubleshooting and servicing custom automation or automated assembly equipment.
    • Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, and industrial robotics.
    • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical equipment.
    • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and pneumatic diagrams.
    • Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
    • Ability to use diagnostic tools and systematically identify root causes of equipment problems.
    • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 75%.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with industrial robots, servo motors, motion control, vision systems, or machine safety systems.
    • Experience with PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation, or similar.
    • Experience with HMI troubleshooting.
    • Experience with automated assembly, packaging, medical device, or industrial automation equipment.
    • Experience with machine commissioning and customer acceptance testing.
    • Knowledge of pneumatic and electrical control systems.
    • Experience providing customer training and technical support.

     

    Other Requirements

    • Frequent travel to customer manufacturing facilities, up to 75%.
    • Ability to work around operating machinery and industrial automation equipment.
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and occasionally lift equipment or components as required.
    • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, during machine installations, startups, or critical service events.
