Job Description

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, you'll do meaningful work that helps our customers make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Our electron microscopy technologies support customers working at the forefront of scientific research, materials analysis and semiconductor innovation.

As a Field Service Engineer II, you will support sophisticated Dualbeam electron microscopy systems used by customers for high-resolution imaging, materials analysis and advanced semiconductor applications. You will be responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing complex instruments while serving as a trusted technical partner to customers.

This role is well suited for someone who enjoys solving difficult technical problems, working independently and supporting highly advanced equipment in customer environments. A significant portion of the work may take place in semiconductor fabrication facilities and cleanroom environments.

What You'll Do

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair complex Dualbeam electron microscopy systems at customer sites.
  • Diagnose technical issues across electronics, mechanical systems, ultra-high vacuum systems, high-voltage components, controls and related instrument subsystems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and corrective service to help maximize instrument uptime and reliability.
  • Respond to customer needs, including situations requiring short-notice support.
  • Communicate clearly with customers regarding system status, troubleshooting progress, repairs and next steps.
  • Train and support customers on safe and effective equipment operation.
  • Read and interpret technical documentation, schematics and service procedures.
  • Document service activities accurately and prepare detailed service reports.
  • Work independently while partnering with technical support, engineering and other service colleagues when escalation is required.
  • Follow all safety, quality and customer-site requirements.
  • Support customer environments that may include semiconductor fabrication facilities and controlled cleanroom settings.
  • Travel within the assigned territory, with primary support focused on customers in Minnesota and occasional support across the Central U.S.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in Electronics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related technical discipline; or
  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical field (or a combination of education and work experience) plus at least 2 years of hands-on experience installing, troubleshooting or repairing complex analytical, scientific or technical equipment.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to travel approximately ~50%, with the majority of activity expected to be local to Minnesota.
  • Ability to reside within approximately a 45-minute commute of Bloomington, Minnesota.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work safely in a variety of laboratory and customer-site environments.
  • Ability to work in cleanroom environments and comply with customer-specific gowning, safety and access requirements.
  • Ability to support schedules that may occasionally fall outside standard Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. hours based on customer needs.
  • Proficiency in English; additional languages are beneficial.

What Will Help You Succeed

  • Strong electronics and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to diagnose complex equipment issues down to the component level.
  • Experience supporting sophisticated electromechanical or analytical systems.
  • Experience with ultra-high vacuum systems and high-voltage equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions in the field.
  • Strong customer service, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read schematics and technical documentation.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Experience using service-management software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to document service work clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to train customers and explain technical concepts in a clear, practical way.
  • Experience working in semiconductor fabrication, cleanroom or semiconductor-equipment environments is a plus.
  • Previous field service or technical support experience with electron microscopy systems is highly valued.
  • Prior Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) field service or technical support experience may also be relevant for additional assignments.
  • Relevant technical certifications are a plus.

Why This Role Matters

Our customers rely on advanced electron microscopy systems to perform critical research, materials characterization and semiconductor analysis. When these systems are unavailable, important customer work can be delayed.

As a Field Service Engineer, you help keep that work moving. By restoring instrument performance, preventing downtime and providing high-quality technical support, you help customers get the full value from highly advanced technology and continue the scientific and industrial work that depends on it.

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, your technical expertise helps turn innovation into real-world customer impact.
