Pay: $60-65/hour + optional medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match
Overview
The Fiber Optic Network Design & Deployment (OSP) Engineer is responsible for designing and deploying OSP fiber networks connecting substations, generation facilities, control centers, and other utility sites. This role also includes microwave radio system engineering, telecom site and facility design, power and backup systems integration, and project planning and execution support.
Key Responsibilities
- Design OSP fiber networks connecting substations, generation facilities, control centers, and other utility sites
- Design aerial and underground fiber routes, including:
- OPGW on transmission lines
- ADSS on distribution poles
- Produce route maps, cable/hardware selections, and splice/termination plans
- Design for redundancy and resiliency supporting SCADA, protective relaying, and corporate communications
- Support permitting/ROW and ensure compliance with NESC clearances and applicable attachment standards
- Design and optimize point-to-point microwave links (path surveys, LOS analyses, tower location/height, antennas/frequencies, link budgets)
- Coordinate frequency management and regulatory compliance (FCC licensing, interference studies)
- Prepare equipment specifications aligned with project requirements and industry standards (e.g., Telcordia)
- Plan telecom facilities at substations, plants, and control centers, including:
- Towers, poles, antenna mounts, shelters/cabinets, and control house upgrades
- Coordinate civil/site work (layout, grading, access roads, trenching/conduit, foundations)
- Ensure physical security, environmental/hazard mitigation, and infrastructure compatibility
- Specify and coordinate AC feeds, DC power plants, batteries, and standby generators
- Ensure grounding/surge protection and compliance with NEC and applicable electrical standards
- Support project lifecycle from scoping through commissioning
- Develop scopes, cost estimates, and full engineering design packages (drawings, splice diagrams, layouts, wiring diagrams, BOMs)
- Use CAD/GIS tools to produce maps and diagrams
- Support implementation schedules, change management, cutovers, outage clearances, and MOP documentation
Required Skills
- Outside Plant (OSP) fiber design and build experience
- Experience with Cisco, Nokia, and Scinea
- Several years of experience in telecom OSP engineering / network design (utility or similar industry)
- Experience designing aerial and underground fiber routes (OPGW, ADSS)
- Experience producing route maps, cable/hardware selections, and splice/termination plans
- Experience designing for redundancy/resiliency supporting SCADA, protective relaying, and corporate communications
- Experience supporting permitting/ROW and ensuring compliance with NESC clearances and industry attachment standards
- Experience designing and optimizing point-to-point microwave links (path surveys, LOS analyses, link budgets, etc.)
- Experience coordinating regulatory compliance (FCC licensing, interference studies)
- Experience preparing equipment specifications aligned to project requirements and industry standards
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics/Telecommunications Engineering, or related field
Preferred Skills
- Equivalent work experience and relevant technical training/certifications considered
