Job Description
Position Title: Outdoor Adventure Staff
Summary of Responsibilities:
Outdoor Adventure (OA) staff are responsible for the daily operations of the Climbing Wall and associated outdoor facilities. Staff also work support shifts on the challenge course, trips program, and events. OA staff aid in supervision and administration of all program areas and must prove efficiency in computer applications necessary to position and programs.
Primary Duties:
- Enforce program area rules and policies
- Assist in Climbing Wall operations by:
- Check patrons into the climbing wall through Fusion software
- Deliver safety orientations to patrons
- Climb, inspect, and maintain climbing wall routes
- Perform equipment inspections and identify equipment failure
- Offer belays to patrons
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of equipment and facility
- Set routes on bouldering and top rope wall
- Rent outdoor equipment to patrons
- Return, inspect, and clean outdoor rental equipment
- Assist in Challenge Course operations by:
- Correctly set up and break down low activities, high rope belay stations, and set-up giant swing
- Belay high elements and assist with leap of faith, giant swing, and zip line
- Aid in facilitation of low teambuilding activities
- Operate and secure ladders duties on high element activities
- Check low elements for ground hazards, tree/shrub dangers, and unwanted insects and animals
- Assist in removing and documenting any hazards found
- Assist in Trips Program by:
- Aid in facilitation of the pre-trip meeting and any skills sessions
- Check and pack all gear/equipment needed for a trip
- Educate participants on how to perform activities in the proper and safe manner.
- Aid in facilitation and participate in all outdoor activities related to the trip
- Hiking, climbing, fishing, mountain biking, camping, water and snow related activities …etc.
- Participant in post-trip debriefing with professional and student staff
- Assist in cooking and preparing meals
- Assist in fire management
- Assist in Outdoor Adventure Events on Campus by:
- Setting up and taking down any equipment needed for the event.
- Aid in facilitation and participate in the events
- Hiking, climbing, fishing, mountain biking, camping, water and snow related activities …etc.
- Cooking and Fire management.
- Market other Outdoor Adventure and Campus Recreation events.
- Assist in maintenance of outdoor recreation facilities by:
- Using tools such as weed trimmers, hand saws, hedge clippers, and a brush mower
- Performing maintenance and refueling to equipment listed above
- Understands how to trim trees/bushes, fix ground hazards, and remove unwanted insects to allow for safe usage of the facilities listed above
Department Responsibilities
- Market Campus Recreation and area events
- Demonstrate a commitment to providing an environment where people feel welcomed, valued, supported, and respected as they work to pursue their academic and professional goals
- Act as a first responder in emergency situations
- Attend all department and area trainings and meetings as assigned
- Must possess a current American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Provided by the department at no cost
- Keep up to date on all TrainTraq assignments
- Be prepared to encounter and respond to various hazards, with training provided to ensure safety and proper handling of potential risks.
- Maintain a standard of conduct while participating in Campus Rec activities or facilities, serving as a role model for other patrons by adhering to all safety, behavior, and policies
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Assists with department events and programming as needed
- Work early morning, night and weekend hours as needed
Requirements of the job:
- Must be able to pass climbing belay certification before the first day on the job.
