Occupational Summary
An after-school tutor provides academic support to students outside of regular classroom hours. Tutors help students understand lessons, complete homework, improve study skills, and build confidence in subjects such as math, reading, science, and writing. The role requires patience, communication skills, and the ability to create a positive and supportive learning environment for students of different ages and learning levels.
- Work is typically performed in an after-school program setting
- Requires sitting, standing, walking, and working closely with students for extended periods
- Afternoon hours (2:30pm-6pm) during the school year
- Frequent interaction with children, teens, teachers, and program staff
- Requires patience, attentiveness, and the ability to manage multiple students or tasks at once

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Engages elementary age students in academic learning through reading and math tutoring
- Assist students with homework, assignments, and test preparation
- Explain academic concepts in a clear and easy-to-understand manner
- Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions
- Encourage positive study habits, organization, and time management skills
- Support students in improving academic performance and classroom participation
- Create a safe, respectful, and encouraging learning environment
- Monitor student progress and provide motivation and constructive feedback
- Communicate professionally with students, staff, and parents when needed
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while working with students
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrolled student at Craven Community College and eligible for the Work-Study Program
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliable, responsible, and able to maintain professionalism
- Ability to work well with children and teens from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team
- Basic knowledge of academic subjects such as math, reading, writing, or science
- Ability to assist students with multiple subjects and learning styles
