Position Overview

The Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for providing urgent care services, including assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating, and educating patients. This role works closely with physicians and other clinicians in a collaborative, team-based approach to patient care.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position may share in the supervision of RNs, LPNs, and/or medical assistants, depending on departmental organization.

Key Responsibilities

The Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner will:

  • Assess patient status by obtaining health history through patient and family interviews, chart reviews, evaluation of presenting illness, risk factors, family history, psychosocial situation, and cultural factors.
  • Perform appropriate physical examinations.
  • Order and/or perform appropriate laboratory, diagnostic, and screening tests.
  • Seek additional information as needed, including consultation with physicians and other clinicians, for evaluation of illness.
  • Integrate data to determine diagnosis and therapeutic plan, including identification of health risks.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans by prescribing and/or dispensing medications and injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws.
  • Treat minor lacerations.
  • Instruct patients and families regarding medications and treatments.
  • Educate patients on health promotion and illness prevention.
  • Recommend appropriate community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Communicate appropriate case management information to other professionals and community agencies.
  • Prepare documentation for medical records, including updating patient charts with examination and test results, diagnosis, medications, and treatment in written or computerized format.
  • Participate in peer reviews, chart reviews, staff education, clinical guideline development, continuing education, and quality assurance activities.
  • Act as a consultant and collaborator to the clinical team in area of specialty.
  • Comply with patient confidentiality requirements.
  • Promote patient advocacy.
  • Collaborate with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
  • Provide monitoring and continuity of care between visits according to treatment plan, including triaging patient calls and emails.

Education Requirements

  • MSN required
  • Successful completion of advanced practitioner training and certification as a practitioner, general or specialized, from an approved nurse practitioner program

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of three years of professional nursing experience in a clinic setting
  • Two years of nurse practitioner experience preferred

Licensure & Certifications

Candidates must have:

  • Current state registered nurse license
  • Current state license as an advanced registered nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority
  • Current CPR certification

Equipment Operated

This role uses standard medical examination room equipment and instruments. May also include use of a computer and/or health information management system.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a combination of exam rooms and medical offices. This role includes frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Mental & Physical Requirements

This position requires:

  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 10 pounds
  • Ability to work under stress in emergency situations
  • Occasional irregular working hours
