Scion Legal is seeking a DCP&P Attorney to join a growing New Jersey family law firm with an established child welfare practice. This opportunity offers meaningful advocacy for families, ownership of your caseload, and a primarily remote arrangement supported by dedicated paralegal and administrative staff. Founded by a nationally recognized child welfare attorney and Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the firm brings substantial experience to complex abuse, neglect, and parental rights matters. It's an excellent opportunity to deepen your child welfare practice within a collaborative team that values autonomy, professional growth, and work-life balance.
What We Offer:
Competitive base salary, based on experience, with additional flexibility potentially available for exceptional candidates.
Primarily remote work for New Jersey-based attorneys, with in-person onboarding, approximately four office visits annually, and in-state court appearances.
Autonomy to manage your caseload, backed by dedicated paralegal, administrative, and marketing support.
A 1,750-hour annual billable requirement with a gradual ramp-up: 50% of the monthly target in month one, 75% in month two, and 100% in month three.
Medical, dental, and vision insurance, an FSA, and supplemental AFLAC options.
A 401(k) with a 3% employer match and year-end profit-sharing, subject to eligibility.
Quarterly commission opportunities of 17% on qualifying closed matters with at least 90% collected.
Annual performance reviews, opportunities for raises, and discretionary year-end bonuses.
A firm-issued laptop, $50 monthly cell phone reimbursement, mileage and parking reimbursement, and coverage of reasonable CLE and bar dues expenses.
Established intake and file-opening systems, plus Filevine and LexisNexis, so you can focus on client representation.
If You Have:
A JD from an accredited law school and active New Jersey Bar admission in good standing.
At least two years of relevant legal experience, ideally handling DCP&P matters in private practice.
A strong foundation in child welfare, public-sector DCP&P work, or law guardian representation and the ability to transition into private practice.
The ability to manage cases independently or with limited mentoring.
Experience with court appearances, hearings, legal research, drafting, and case strategy.
Strong communication, negotiation, and analytical skills, along with sound judgment and an empathetic approach to sensitive family matters.
New Jersey residency and the ability to attend court proceedings throughout the state.
You Will Be:
Managing DCP&P matters from inception through resolution, developing strategies tailored to each client's circumstances.
Representing clients in court hearings, trials, and related administrative proceedings.
Handling fact-finding hearings, Title 30 summary hearings, permanency hearings, emergency removals, and Office of Administrative Law appeals, as appropriate to your experience.
Advising clients navigating complex child welfare issues, including matters involving mental health and substance use.
Researching legal issues and drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, and other case documents.
Preparing clients for proceedings, negotiating on their behalf, and communicating clearly throughout their cases.
Collaborating with paralegal and administrative staff, maintaining timely billing records, and contributing to a respectful, supportive team.
