The Philosophy Department is committed to successful teaching of core requirements in Philosophy to diverse student body in support of the University’s Catholic and Vincentian Mission.
Responsibilities
Teaching the core philosophy classes:
An investigation of the general question “Whatdoes it mean to be a human person?” Specialemphasis on the nature of human freedom,consciousness and cognition, and the origin andsignificance of life. Central to the course will bea discussion of the spirituality, immortality anddignity of the human person. The course beginswith an introduction to philosophy and to criticalthinking.
Credit: 3 semester hours.
Prerequisite: PHI 1000.
Human happiness and theessential means of achieving it; universal andobjective morality vs. relativism and subjectivism;principles used in formulating a rationalmoral judgment; the functions of law and theconscience; prudence and the moral virtues as theheart of the moral life.
Credit: 3 semester hours.
Prerequisite: PHI 1000.
An introductory course which attempts to articulate ultimate principlesof knowing and being. Central questions to beconsidered are: Is there evidence of God’s existenceand correspondingly, is there a solution to theproblem of evil? Does human cognition permit ofultimate foundations? Is nature teleological and ifso can it serve as an objective standard of value?The course also considers traditional metaphysicalaspirations in the context of contemporarychallenges from the physical and social sciences.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is $1803 - $2215 per credit hour or $5409 - $6645 per course.
