Western Michigan University invites applications for a full-time fiscal year, 12-month Tenure Track Faculty Specialist position in the Department of Physical Therapy. The ideal start date is July 1, 2026, and is flexible.
The Department of Physical Therapy and the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program were established and approved in 2015. The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at WMU achieved initial accreditation in December 2021 and will seek reaffirmation of accreditation in 2026. We are seeking highly motivated, energetic, and team-oriented individuals with demonstrated contemporary expertise in the following: Orthopedic physical therapy, advanced manual therapy, dry needling, biomechanics, kinesiology, and motor control.
This individual will join a DPT faculty of eight (8) in growing and assessing a contemporary, innovative, and student-centered 2.5-year DPT program.
Major Duties
- Experience working with students and colleagues from diverse communities, backgrounds, identities, learning styles, and abilities.
- Experience working with orthopedic populations across the lifespan and skilled in the management of individuals with musculoskeletal conditions.
- Teach in areas of expertise and additional assigned content areas.
- Supervise and advise students.
- Develop and sustain a scholarly research agenda in accordance with contemporary CAPTE standards and WMU institutional expectations.
- Provide service to the DPT program, department, university, profession, and community.
- Contribute to an interprofessional environment of instruction and community collaborations.
- Contribute to curricular and programmatic development and assessment.
- Participate in the accreditation process.
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned Physical Therapy (PT) degree from an accredited institution, AND Academic credentials to include any of the following:
- PT degree AND an academic doctoral degree from an accredited institution (PhD, ScD, EdD, or DHSc), OR
- Clinical doctorate in physical therapy from an accredited institution (DPT) AND ABPTS certification.
- Evidence of physical therapy licensure, and eligibility/intention to obtain Michigan physical therapy licensure with the expectation for ongoing engagement in clinical practice and/or clinical research.
- 5 years demonstrated teaching and assessment experience (must be completed by date employment would commence).
- 1 year of experience teaching in a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program.
- Contemporary expertise in one or more of the identified areas of physical therapy.
- Experience with research and evidence of scholarly products.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to function well within a collegial, collaborative work environment.
- Experience with CAPTE accreditation process.
- Membership in the American Physical Therapy Association.
Desired Qualifications
- Academic doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, EdD, or DHSc) from an accredited institution.
- Completion of ABPTRFE accredited fellowship or residence.
- Completion of ABPTS certification.
- Demonstrated experience conducting research with a scholarly agenda that includes:
- History of external grant award/s for scientific research
- Evidence of disseminated products.
- National and/or international level presentation/s.
- Peer-reviewed publication/s.
- History of mentoring junior faculty in research.
