Bradford Woods is Indiana Universitys (IUs) Outdoor Center and proud to be a department within the Office of Student Life, committed to promoting learning and respect in all programs, interactions, and partnerships. For over 50 years Bradford Woods has been providing recreational, educational, and leadership development opportunities to youth and adults locally, nationally, and globally.

Located just 30 minutes north of the IU Bloomington campus, Bradford Woods is a private property that consists of 2,500-acres of wooded land with a 110-acre lake. Our property sits just outside of Martinsville off State Road 67. The property is used by over 400 unique programs from retreats and events to environmental education school programs. Job Summary

Department Specific Responsibilities

• Collaborates with program Assistant Directors to advance program options and opportunities at Bradford Woods in areas including but not limited to Environmental Education, Adventure Education, Retreats and Team Building and Recreation Therapy.
• Responsible for leading and facilitating programs in the field.
• Hosts for retreat groups as needed, assists in the development and implementation of special events, participates in area budget management and may coordinate, inspects and maintain challenge course facilities according to Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) standards.
• Supervises Program Specialists and Professional Outdoor Instructors.
• Serves as a site safety resource by supporting emergency preparedness efforts, assisting with implementation of the Bradford Woods Emergency Action Plan (EAP), and helping coordinate emergency response procedures during severe weather or other incidents.
• Provides on-call operational support to assist with emergency situations, facility issues, and other time-sensitive incidents requiring program or site response.
• Coordinates the inspection, inventory, and restocking of first aid kits, emergency supplies, and other safety equipment to ensure compliance with organizational standards and operational readiness.
• Supports organizational compliance with applicable health, safety, and risk management policies, accreditation standards, and best practices.

General Responsibilities

• Responsible for design and implementation of recreational, educational, professional development, and team-building retreats, camps, and other outdoor education programming.
• Manages day-to-day operations, logistics, and issues related to programming, providing technical or informational support to participants.
• Identifies and develops contracts, partners, and coalitions. Researches, identifies, and negotiates facilitators, speakers, and presenters.
• Develops educational materials, curriculum, equipment, elements, and other resources necessary to conduct programmatic offerings and services.
• Develops activities appropriate for the participants in a given outdoor program, camp, or retreat and works with leaders and constituents to develop itinerary.
• Designs and implements evaluation tools for program effectiveness, makes recommendations, and implements changes based on results.
• Assists in budget development and revenue projections and ensures programs, camps, and retreats align with budgetary needs.
• May assist with seasonal or temporary staffing needs including selection, hiring, training, and supervision.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelors degree in related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

• 2 years in related field.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

• Possesses a valid drivers license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

Preferred

• Current Lifeguard Certification with Waterfront Skills Module from a nationally recognized certifying organization upon date of hire.
• Current Lifeguard Instructor Certification from a nationally recognized certifying organization upon date of hire.
• Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Level II Certification and/or Challenge Course Manager Certification upon date of hire.
• Certified Pool and Spa Operator Certification upon date of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.

This position requires extended hours, including evenings and weekends during the summer camp season, to support residential and program operations.

This position requires some evening and weekend commitments for recruitment, training, event hosting, and program support, outside of the summer camp season.

This positions requires flexible to meet program needs.

This position requires the ability to live on-site.
